Lubbock, Texas ? Martin Zeno scored 19 points, and Alan Voskuil keyed a second-half run to lead Texas Tech past UC Riverside, 68-56, Saturday.
Texas Tech led 35-31 at halftime and had its lead trimmed to one early in the second half.
But the Red Raiders cinched things with a 17-3 run to put the game away in their season opener.
The win gives Texas Tech’s Bob Knight, who became the all-time winningest coach in Division I men’s basketball history last season, his 891st career win.
UC-Riverside’s Sean Cunningham scored 15 points, and Larry Cunningham added 13.
The Highlanders got within 45-44 on Sean Cunnigham’s jumper with 13:12 left.
Voskuil, who scored 12 points, answered with a layup and a three-pointer to put the Red Raiders up 50-44. That started the game-winning spurt, which ended with Texas Tech ahead 62-47.
Voskuil also had four steals as UC Riverside turned the ball over 27 times.
Nebraska 67, Presbyterian 52
Lincoln, Neb. – Jay R. Strowbridge scored all 12 of his points in the first half to lead Nebraska.
The Cornhuskers made five of their first six three-pointers and led by 27 at intermission.
Presbyterian (0-1) was playing its first game in NCAA Division I and did not score for more than five minutes. By then Nebraska (1-0) was up 10-0.
The Huskers went ahead 23-5 on Ade Dagunduro’s three-pointer with 10:58 left. Nebraska then went cold, going scoreless for more than four minutes. The Blue Hose scored seven unanswered to cut the lead to 11 on Josh Johnson’s basket with 6:24 left in the half.
Iowa State 67, Centenary 57
Ames, Iowa – Bryan Petersen scored 18 points, Craig Brackins had 16, and Iowa State held on after a fast start to beat Centenary to win the Cyclone Challenge.
Jiri Hubalek added eight points and six rebounds for the Cyclones (2-0), who kept Centenary scoreless for the first 6:10 and led by as many as 19 in the first half.
