One thing is certain about Kansas University’s softball team. After last weekend, the only way the Jayhawks can go is up.
After lopsided 13-0 and 7-0 losses to Texas A&M, KU will play host to Missouri in a twinbill today at Arrocha Ballpark.
The 3 p.m. opener will be a make-up of last Wednesday’s rainout in Columbia, Mo. KU will be the home team in the 5 p.m. nightcap.
Missouri is one of the hottest teams in the league. The Tigers are 30-18 overall, but they’re a surprising 6-1 in the Big 12 Conference after splitting with national power Oklahoma last weekend in Columbia, Mo.
Mizzou’s forte is hitting. The Tigers boast two of the league’s most potent sluggers in Amanda Renth and Micaela Minner, and average 5.92 runs per game. On the flip side, MU ranks last in the Big 12 in pitching with a bloated 3.88 earned-run average.
Meanwhile, Kansas (27-16, 3-6 Big 12) has been struggling at the plate. The Jayhawks’ team batting average in its nine conference games has dipped to a league-low .184. KU also leads the league in strikeouts.
After today, KU will play its next five games on the road, starting with a trip this weekend to Texas Tech.
