Kansas University’s Amanda Costner will take a 7-stroke lead into the final round of the Big 12 golf championships.

Costner, a senior from Claremore, Okla., fired a 1-over-par 73 to go with her first round 71 and stands at even-par 144 entering the final 18 holes at Ridgewood Country Club.

Oklahoma State’s Sarah Bradley and Nebraska’s Elli Brown shot 76 and 74, respectively, Tuesday and are at 7-over-par 151.

As a team, KU stands fifth with 626 strokes. Oklahoma State leads with 611, followed by Texas A&M (615), Baylor (619) and Nebraska (619).

Costner today will try to become the first KU golfer to win a league title. Prior to this year, she was also the only KU athlete to place among the top 10 individuals in scoring (seventh place in 2004) since the Big 12 began competition in 1997.

“She had real composure today and is in good position,” KU coach Erin O’Neil said. “Her experience and hard work is definitely helping. It was a tough day with the winds and rain. The girls did a good job of hanging in there and grinding it out.”

Junior Annie Giangrosso is tied for 28th place after shooting a 77 in the second round. Freshman Emily Powers is tied for 38th, freshman Camilla Svensson is 42nd and freshman Meghan Gockel is 56th.

The final round starts at 8:30 a.m. today.
