KU announces 20 football signees

By J-W Staff Reports     Feb 4, 2004

KU football coach Mark Mangino signed 20 recruits to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, including a former recruit of a former Jayhawk coach.

The Jayhawks biggest surprise of the day was signing defensive lineman Charlton Keith, who played under former KU coach Glen Mason two years ago at Minnesota. Keith led the Gophers in sacks as a redshirt freshman, but transfered to Minnesota West Community and Technical College last year.

The Jayhawks also signed defensive backs Jermail Ashley, Theodore Baines and Raymond Brown; offensive lineman Ryan Cantrell; defensive lineman Anthony Collins; wide receiver Dexton Fields; running back Gary Green II; safety Rodney Harris; offensive linemen Todd Haselhorst and Scott Haverkamp; quarterback Marcus Herford; defensive tackle James McClinton; tight end Jim Reuber; linebacker Mike Rivera; quarterback Jason Swanson; defensive back Aqib Talib; and punter Kyle Tucker.

“We believe that we’ve helped ouselves in areas of need and enhanced the overall athleticism and speed of our football team with this recruiting class,” Mangino said in a statement.

The official University of South Florida web site lists linebacker Brouce Mompremier, who had given a verbal commitment to KU, as a USF signee.

KU also announced two walk-on signees, kicker Jeff Edwards, who played at Coffeyville Community College last season, and Lawrence High tight end Josh Lawrence.

Mangino also announced that three players who were with the program last year — Scott Bajza, Zack Hood and Matt Thompson — would receive scholarships for the 2004 season.
