Don Fambrough: 1979-82

By Staff     Sep 9, 2002

Resigned, now re-signed would be one way to describe Don Fambrough’s head-coaching fortunes at Kansas University. After being denied a contract extension in 1974, Fambrough resigned.

The coach with the deepest and strongest ties to KU football became the only man to be hired to the job twice when he replaced Bud Moore, the man that replaced him.

Fambrough was on athletic director Bob Marcum’s search committee, helping seek Moore’s replacement when the AD asked him if he’d be interested in a return to coaching. He was.

After a second four-year term, Fambrough was ousted by incoming athletic director Monte Johnson and Fambrough’s staff of assistant’s were given their notice as well.

After World War II, Fambrough came to play for KU and between then and his ouster in 1982, he spent only four years away from the KU program when he spent time as an assistant coach at East Texas State and Wichita State.

Fambrough posted a 36-49-5 record over his two stints as head coach at Kansas.
