Russell’s throw of 77-103*4 broke his own meet record, set an overall Big 12 record and gave him his sixth victory of the season. He set the all-time collegiate record at the Iowa State Classic with a throw of 81-11*4.
While Russell was the favorite in his competition, junior Monique Peters was a surprise winner for Kansas in the women’s long jump. Peters, ranked sixth in the long jump coming in, finished first with a personal-best leap of 19-103*4.
Junior weight thrower Jamie Waters improved her personal-best mark and scored points for KU with an eighth-place throw of 54-11*2.
Junior Benaud Shirley scored points in the men’s long jump in sixth place with a KU season-best 23-71*2.
Jennie Wonder set a KU record in the semifinals of the 60-meter hurdles in 8.5 seconds to advance to today’s finals.
