College Station, Texas ? Kansas University’s women finished fifth in the Big 12 Conference championships that concluded on Saturday.
The Jayhawks were only four points out of fourth and 22 points behind third-place Iowa State heading into the final day. But after placing six swimmers in championship heats in the morning preliminaries, including three in the 200 breaststroke, KU could not overcome the deficit.
Freshman Miranda Isaac led a trio of Jayhawks in the championship heat of the 200 breast with a fourth-place finish in a time of 4:19.19. Sophomores Kristen Johnson and Maegen Himes were sixth and eighth, respectively.
Freshman Amy Gruber wound up seventh in the 100 free with a time of 50.94. Senior Carrie Kirkham added a second-place finish in the consolation heat with a time of 51.08 followed by freshman Jackie Krueger in fifth.
Junior Heidi Landherr finished eighth in the 200 back with a career-best time of 2:03.91 while junior Julie Ottmar was third in the consolation heat with a season-best time of 2:06.12.
In the 200 fly, junior Gwen Haley finished eighth with a time of 2:05.50 while Landherr added a fifth-place finish in the consolation heat.
KU’s 400 freestyle relay team of Krueger, Kirkham, freshman Aly Colver and Gruber, closed the day in dramatic fashion, finishing second with a season-best time of 3:23.79, less than a second off the school record (3:23.28).
