The mother of a slain Kansas University student will meet with the president of Costa Rica this morning in Washington, D.C.
Jeanette Stauffer, Topeka, will meet with Miguel Angel Rodriguez to discuss the murder investigation of her daughter, Shannon Martin. Martin, 23, was killed in May while doing research in Golfito, Costa Rica.
Rodriguez is in Washington, D.C., for meetings with President Bush and other officials. In a meeting Thursday afternoon with Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kan., Rodriguez expressed his regret for what happened.
“When I talked about the case with the president, he pointed out that for them, it is a terrible black eye on their country, and they want it successfully brought to a conclusion,” Brownback said.
Eric Hotmire, Brownback’s press secretary, said today’s meeting between Stauffer and Rodriguez is “terribly important.”
“The president of Costa Rica agreeing personally to meet with Shannon’s mother is an honorable development,” Hotmire said. “For Mrs. Stauffer to be able to look the president of Costa Rica in the eye and express to him what this loss means to her and her family is important.”
The meeting will be at an undisclosed Washington location. Stauffer will be accompanied by Robert Woody, a KU representative.
KU officials said they asked for the meeting with the president. Hotmire said Brownback’s office also played a role in arranging the meeting.
