Leavenworth High basketball player Wayne Simien will be out at least three weeks with a slight ligament tear in his right shoulder.
Simien, a 6-foot-9, 240-pound senior who has signed with Kansas University, had an MRI on Monday. His shoulder was dislocated in last Friday’s game against Shawnee Mission East.
“We received some good news today,” Simien’s father, Wayne Sr., said on Monday. “The doctors think if it sits three weeks, there’s a chance it’ll heal and tighten enough he could play at state or sub-state.”
Simien, however, still might need surgery that would require a four- to six-month rehabilitation. He will be evaluated several times during the next three weeks.
“They gave him exercises to do after this week,” the elder Simien said. “The doctor said there have been other tears where they elected to not do surgery and the individual did OK as long as it stays in place and doesn’t pop out again. We are encouraged.”
Simien is averaging about 20 points a game for the defending Class 6A state champion Pioneers. He signed with Kansas last November.
