Yes, there will be a 2002 Kansas Relays.

The meet, which took a two-year hiatus because of Memorial Stadium renovations before returning last year, will be held April 17-20 at Memorial Stadium.

“I can’t tell you how many of the Olympians came up to me and told me what a great time they had. We expect them to tell others and we’ll have even more Olympic-caliber athletes next year,” meet director Tim Weaver said.

“We had over 4,500 athletes and I think we converted some fans to track and field.”

The Relays could leave its April time slot in 2003. The NCAA is starting regional qualifying for the national meet starting next year. So the Relays will be held the week before the Big 12 meet.

Weaver sees the Relays possibly becoming a last-chance NCAA qualifying meet in early May to avoid being held so close to conference championship time.

“If we decide we need to change our dates we will have one big, long lunch with coaches of high school, college and Olympic athletes to get input,” Weaver said. “There are some meets like the Shawnee Mission North Relays (May 4) which have been around 50 or 51 years. We don’t want to be the big bully saying we’re going to hold our meet and don’t care about yours.”
