Portland preps to visit on Oct. 13

Kansas may sign not one, but two Portland, Ore., basketball players this recruiting season.

Jefferson High’s Aaron Miles and Michael Lee are both expected to attend Late Night With Roy Williams on Oct. 13 at Allen Fieldhouse.

Miles, a 6-foot point guard, who earlier said he’d be attending Arizona’s Midnight Madness, has flip-flopped and decided to attend KU’s Late Night along with Lee, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard.

Miles, who originally said he’d visit KU the first weekend of November, has moved up his KU visit and will visit Arizona on Oct. 20.

“I think the University of Kansas is definitely his No. 1 interest now,” Portland Legends basketball coach Troy Berry said Sunday night after visiting with Miles. “He has decided to go to Late Night With Roy Williams along with Michael (Lee).

“From what I understand, Kansas is now recruiting both Aaron and Michael.”

Lee, a football receiver who caught two TD passes tossed by football quarterback Miles last Friday, recently made a campus visit to Oregon the same weekend as Miles.

“Michael is a great football player. He is good enough to play baskeball on that level,” Berry said. “He has played in some big-time summer camps and played against great competition with our summer program. Kansas is not the only school interested in the both of them for basketball.”

The thought of attending KU’s Late Night with Lee, plus a pair of California recruits, was too much for Miles to pass up.

“When Aaron said he would go to Arizona, he was not sure how these Late Nights ran. He wants to go to Kansas and be with Josh, Jamal and Michael. They are all friends and want to see Late Night With Roy Williams,” Berry said.

Josh is Josh Childress, a 6-5 shooting guard from Lakewood, Calif. Jamal is Jamal Sampson, a 6-10 pivot from Santa Ana, Calif.

Childress is considering KU, Stanford and Arizona. Sampson is down to KU, UConn, Saint Louis, Cal and VIrginia.

Berry said Lee and Childress could both fit on KU’s roster.

“I see Josh as a bigger wing player,” Berry said.

Interestingly, Halstead power forward Dennis Latimore recently switched his KU visit from Oct. 20 to next weekend. It’s believe Arizona wanted him to switch the dates so the Wildcats would be the last school to entertain Latimore (at UA’s Late Night).

KU has six scholarships to give this year, but can only give five because of a new NCAA rule that limits schools to five scholarships in one year and eight over a two year period.

The Jayhawks have received a verbal commitment from Leavenworth High power forward Wayne Simien. Modesto, Calif., forward Chuck Hayes visited KU last week. The Jayhawks reportedly lead Kentucky for Hayes.

Kansas City Sumner point guard Jeff Hawkins and SM Miege shooting guard Jamar Howard will visit KU this weekend along with Latimore.
