“I’m not sure coach (Roy) Williams would like to lose his top two all-time leading scorers in the same year,” third-year KU coach Ray Bechard said, drawing an analogy between basketball and volleyball.

“We can appreciate what those kids did for us and hopefully build on some of the momentum they gave us last year.”

Amanda Reves and Mary Beth Albrecht, the top two kill leaders in KU history, graduated after leading the Jayhawks to a 17-14 mark, 8-12 in Big 12 play.

“I told Reves the other day, ‘What a big mistake you made not red-shirting your first year. You could have another year of eligibility left,”‘ Bechard quipped.

“It puts a lot of pressure on, but it’s good for some other people Myatt, Kidd and Geronymo can take more of that offensive load. There will be more balance.”

The Jayhawks will be led by 1999 honorable mention All-Big 12 pick Amy Myatt, who is KU’s most experienced returning hitter.

Junior setter Molly LaMere, senior outside hitter Nancy Bell and senior middle hitter Danielle Geronymo also started at least 12 matches for the Jayhawks.

Sara Kidd has an ankle injury and probably will miss the Purdue tourney. Kylie Thomas will also start with Sarah Rome taking over for Kidd. Defensive specialists Jamie Morningstar and Jennifer Kraft also will see playing time.

“We are taking on a more aggressive preseason than we ever have before,” Bechard said. “I think it will prepare us a little more for the Big 12 Conference.

Bechard likes his roster, which includes eight freshmen and sophomores.

“We lost a lot of experience. We think we’ve recruited talented players,” Bechard said. “I think this is going to be a good year for Kansas volleyball.”

KU will make its home debut Sept. 6 against Wichita State.
