Boschee hopes he’s back

KU's Kenny Gregory, left, and Drew Gooden share a celebratory chest bump. The Jayhawks had reason to rejoice following their 77-43 victory Saturday night.

? While a 2-for-6 night from three-point range might not sound like a triumphant showing, it could be just what Jeff Boschee needed.

The 6-foot-1 junior guard hit only 33 percent of his long-range shots in Kansas University’s 77-43 victory over Southwest Missouri State, but considering his troubles in the past five games, his performance was a confidence builder.

Coming into Saturday night’s game in Kemper Arena, Boschee had hit two of his last 19 attempts from beyond the arc.

“I’ve just got to be able to have the mindset and confidence to knock them down,” he said, “and tonight I was able to make a three-point shot for the first time in a couple games and it does give me some confidence back, a little bit, and hopefully this continues.”

Before sinking his fourth attempt against the Bears with 10 seconds left in the first half, Boschee hadn’t made a three-pointer in nearly three weeks.

He shot 1-of-4 from long distance against Illinois State but followed with an 0-for-7 game against Wake Forest. He then hit 1-of-2 against DePaul on Dec. 12, but was a combined 0-for-6 against Tulsa and Ohio State.

“I had been struggling with my three-point shot,” he said. “It’s kind of ironic. Last year I was struggling with my two-point shots and making all my three-point shots and I think it’s a little opposite this year.”

Coming into Saturday’s contest, the junior guard was shooting .261 on three-point shots, down from last year’s .415 performance.

“I’ve just got to be able to not worry about it so much,” Boschee said. “Every shooter goes through a slump and they’ve just got to be tough enough mentally to fight through it. I have been struggling and it has been frustrating, especially when, the last two games, I’ve been in foul trouble and it’s kind of hard to break out of a slump when you’re not in the game because of foul trouble.

“I’ve just got to be able to have the mindset and confidence to knock them down and tonight I was able to make a three-point shot for the first time in a couple games and it does give me some confidence back, a little bit, and hopefully this continues.”

“I just hope I can fight through this and everything will be fine.”

Boschee had struggles off the court this month too. He was forced to spend all day in a Minneapolis, Minn., airport Thursday because of inclement weather.

“I got stuck in Minneapolis there was a big snow storm. There was almost white-out conditions up there,” he said. “My flight got canceled about three times and then they put me on standby and couldn’t get me on that flight so I ended up missing practice and spending the night in Minneapolis. It was kind of frustrating.”

While it might have been annoying, Boschee wouldn’t blame the delay and subsequent missed practice for his continued shooting slump from long distance.

“I don’t think it really affected my game,” he said. “My legs felt good and I felt like I got some of my legs back.

“I kind of would have liked to get back to practice and at least have done something. Sitting in a hotel room gets kind of boring, especially when you’re by yourself. But I don’t want to fly when the weather’s bad and put myself in any danger.”
