T-Rob, Jeff Withey lead KU against Long Beach State

1. Thomas Robinson: Scored 18 of his 26 points in the first half and picked up 11 rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal. They gave him the outside shot and he hit it. Made his first eight field-goal attempts. Cooled down in the second half.

2. Jeff Withey: Toughed his way to 13 points, 13 rebounds and nine blocked shots, a near triple-double. His shot-blocking impacts the game greatly.

3. Conner Teahan: Scored 12 of his 14 points in the first 10:27 of the game, but did plenty else the rest of the way. Had two huge offensive boards on the same possession with less than three minutes left.

4. Tyshawn Taylor: Suffered a knee injury in practice Monday and came off the bench to play 34 minutes with a sleeve over a knee brace. Had four of his five turnovers and none of his four assists in a rough second half.

5. Travis Releford: Didn’t showcase the greatest shot selection on a 10-point, four-turnover night.

6. Justin Wesley: Contributed two points, two rebounds and a blocked shot in nine minutes.

7. Elijah Johnson: Fouled out with 5:37 left and it might not have been such a bad thing, given his performance merited just five second-half minutes.

8. Kevin Young: Scored five points in six minutes, but also gave up four easy points to get the quick hook.

The Keegan Ratings: Season Standings
1. Thomas Robinson (75 points)
2. Tyshawn Taylor (64 points)
3. Jeff Withey (55 points)
4. Travis Releford (51 points)
5. Elijah Johnson (49 points)
6. Conner Teahan (45 points)
7. Justin Wesley (37 points)
8. Kevin Young (30 points)
9. Naadir Tharpe (21 points)
10. Merv Lindsay (4 points)

WIthey should easily get the 1 spot. One blocked shot from a triple double. Love how much he has improved his game.

Think Relaford needs to step up and be our leader out on the perimeter. He's got the most stable mind set amongst the guards. EJ and Taylor are not leaders...and really need leadership in someone in order to showcase their talents.

Guards need to play smarter and mitigate the turnovers. Kraft will eat Taylor's lunch on Saturday if he doesn't get his stuff together. Let's get those buckeyes on Saturday !!!

Withey's shot blocking ability impacts the game much like Aldrich did. It takes a lot of pressure off of our defense.

Bangkok_Jayhawk 2 years, 11 months ago

I agree... Tyshawn is a top talent but is too reckless. He reminds me of Sherron a little in that way.

Ashwin Rao 2 years, 11 months ago

I had the same thought! I wonder how we get all the Sherron/Tyshawn/Tharpe? mold of players? I love it, but you need to have a strong heart to survive as a fan!

Lazy side armed passes are always fun to watch too.

kugator 2 years, 10 months ago

You are frustrated. What about Bill Self. Tyshawn doesn't even look as though he is with the program. The guard play was just that, guard play. This is no doubt the worst guard play of any big 12 team. Forget about winning the conference. KU plays only a half in any given game situation. Way too many turnovers.

I'd rather see Travis start taking more shots, even a few bad ones, than just dribbling side to side and passing the ball off to someone on the perimeter. We already know scoring is an issue with this team and he needs to contribute to take the pressure off the others. The quick hook of last year is probably still spooking him, but he needs to put the ball on the deck more and drive.

Thomas Robinson is going to be a First Team All American.

Nice game by TRob who was on fire, Withey is becoming the center we need, and Teahan as the threat for 3. It still is going to take 5 guys to be a team But it is early in the season yet and I have faith in HCBS. ps Surprised that I dont see any CT bashers after this game..humm....probably in the cellar trolling......

Mark Lindrud 2 years, 11 months ago

The fact is we don't have a quality point guard and that will hurt is down the road

Bangkok_Jayhawk 2 years, 10 months ago

Depending on the day... Tyshawn is always a wild card. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised to see Elijah develop as a dependable PG/combo guard this year.

Does anyone know what Bill Monson was saying to Coach Self in front of the officials table following the game?

topekagnome 2 years, 10 months ago

Sorry, I meant Dan Monson, not Bill Monson.

AsadZ 2 years, 10 months ago

I wondered about the same as he did not look happy and expression on HCBS face was not pleasant either.

Justin Carlson 2 years, 10 months ago

I rewatched that exchange this morning a couple of times! He was saying "that was the worst set of officials he has ever seen" camera panned away!

withey shot ??? no call looked obviously intentional!

releford TO to foul...then LBS shoved him nothing called

withey elbow to the face of LBS player didnt go to the monitor.

self gets a warning because of a bogus call then a weird make call 20sec later!!

milehighhawk 2 years, 10 months ago

What in the world is going on with Elijah??

AsadZ 2 years, 10 months ago

Withey was our best player last night. He was a force especially on D. His presence in the paint saved use many points. It is great to see development in his game and he is getting confident. He was last night's Hawk to Rock. Great Job Big Fella.

It's gonna take some stat scouring for me to decide between Withey and Robinson.

Withey's 13-13-9 is impressive. 83% FT and only 2 fouls helps his case too, but he did have 4 turnovers to Rob's 3.

Robinson's 26-11-1, also very impressive. Only 60% FT but the fact that he only had 1 of KU's 25 fouls is mind boggling. His outside shooting was game altering. Add 3 assists and a steal and he might have clipped Withey with his all-court impact.

Not only where these guys the best two ballers last night, they are also easily the most improved players on the team this year.

TT11, you're killing me man! The lazy passing needs to go away. There is just no excuse for it. You have incredible skill but you are way to fancy. Watch film of Missouri. Watch a LOT of film on Missouri. These guys are going take your milk money because they are crisp, quick, smart and determined. They literally have the eye of the tiger. You need to find it, somewhere.

EJ, perhaps you shouldn't listen to TT11 at all anymore. Just listen to coach and play your game. And stop wearing Sex Panther by Odion. It's not helping your game.

classof94 2 years, 10 months ago

I didn't realized TRob only had 1 foul. At times he backed off on D when they got the ball inside and gave up uncontested layups. He's still a stud, but I'd give the top spot to Withey because had more effect on defense.

KGphoto 2 years, 10 months ago

I'm good with that too. It's really a push to me. Withey was 4 inches taller than their biggest player and it showed. Robinson was the best scorer in the game. Toss up.

If Tharp can't develop (enough in practice to play on the big court), then we are going to be in trouble. To a lesser extent, the same thing goes for Young (& Wesley?). TT & TR are playing way too many minutes early (in the game and season) to be completely effective late (in the game and season).

John Randall 2 years, 10 months ago

Extra minutes for TT and TR will be a problem all season. We just don't have the bench to keep them under 30 minutes, which would help their stat lines a bunch.

The NCAA crapping out with the "partial qualifier" label on MacLemore, Anderson, Traylor really crippled the Jayhawks this year.

Depending on Tharpe and Wesley as 7,8 in the rotation just doesn't bode well for the tough games on schedule – and there are plenty of those.

Thank heaven coach Self issued a red shirt to Connor along with the scolarship! Without him we'd be seeing a total disaster.

Jerry Collins 2 years, 10 months ago

I disagree with dagger108 on court time. I think BS is doing a good job substituting to keep T-Rob fresh and out of trouble. Do agree that Tharp needs to develop for KU to be competitive.

Alohahawk 2 years, 10 months ago

Top two could have gone either way. TRob and Withey were the "men" against LBSU.

However, there were a few, IMHO, who deserved negative points. I mean, if this is a tally sheet for the entire season, and a player's performance is atrocious, maybe they should have points taken away.

REHawk 2 years, 10 months ago

Withey, Robinson, Teahan, Releford, in that order. After that, it is a tossup, as I am deducting TT's negatives from his positives...which doesn't leave him much.
