Freshmen take top two spots in Keegan Ratings

Blog: The Keegan Ratings

After each KU basketball game this season, this is where you can find out the hardwood equivalent of The Nielsen Ratings from Journal-World sports editor Tom Keegan. He'll rate the Jayhawk scholarship players' individual performances, telling you who was worth tuning in to watch. If you agree or maybe even differ, make sure to comment and tell Tom how you really feel. (Scoring: Each week, the top player in the ratings will be awarded 10 points. Second best gets nine points. Third best gets eight points, and so on and so on. The season standings are at the bottom.)

1. Tyshawn Taylor: Played a big part in comeback from a 30-13 deficit. He finished with 12 points and had three assists without a turnover. Made 2 of 3 three-point shots.
2. Marcus Morris: Played well during comeback late in the first half and finished with 12 points and four rebounds.
3. Cole Aldrich: Didn’t play aggressively enough when he was passed the ball, which wasn’t often enough. Did have a game-high 14 rebounds.
4. Mario Little: Six points and five rebounds in 12 minutes.
5. Tyrel Reed: Six points and four rebounds in 16 minutes. Made 2 of 5 three-point shots.
6. Sherron Collins: Made just 6 of 20 shots and had six assists and five turnovers.
7. Brady Morningstar: Played 30 minutes and scored just two points to go with five assists, two steals and no turnovers.
8. Markieff Morris: Was shredded defensively and couldn’t get his shots to drop, but did have four rebounds in 14 minutes.
9. Travis Releford: Played less than a minute and picked up a turnover.

Sherron deserves the last spot.

Not the best game for Sherron, but I do hope he gets his confidence back and works with the team a little more. I love the play that KU does at the end of the first half. Sherron draws the defenders to him and kicks it out to Taylor, Reed, etc. for the three. When he's in the zone, Sherron can be amazing in taking the lead. I'm still rooting for you, Sherron.

The crazy thing is, it was a terrible game for Sherron, yet he still finished with 16 points.

Keegan, don't be afraid to put one of our stars at the bottom of the Keegan ratings. A bad game can happen to anyone.

Sherron singlehandedly took us out of this game, just as he did the game at Missouri with 4 minutes left in the game. He has to learn that when his shot isn't falling, he should contribute in other ways, such as good defense (his rotation on the backside of the zone was nonexistent) and assists (such as the nice dishes he made to Taylor and Reed). Sherron has shot us into a few games this year, but this is his second game that he has shot us out of.

Side note: I don't know that this loss is so bad. We weren't going to get a #1 or #2 seed with the obvious bias against the Big 12. Self gets a couple of extra days to prepare this young team for the real tournament. Rock Chalk, Jayhawk!

KU Chap, you are exactly right. I have wondered if Collins should be the No. 1 guard. Maybe, but maybe not. He is like a gambler taking terrible loses and does not know when to stop. He just has to learn when he cannot be the Man and when he can. A young player has to balance a certain belief in himself with the wisdom to know that he is going to have to rely on others. I also agree with the impact of the loss. Rather lose here in the first round than in the NCAA first round.

MC Morris deserved to be the number one. He picked up the slack for Cole, while Tyshawn still had Sherron and company. Does anyone besides me notice that the refs are singling out the Twins? Ever since that effin (screw) Mizzou game when one of the refs made contact with MC, those two have been getting screwed over. Like the technical MK got for slapping the ball between his hands or MC being pointed off the court during the timeout yesterday, while he was walking to the bench. That is the least of it and the sh*t is really starting to get on my nerves. The officials in the Big XII are effin garbage and they have been blowing it against us all season. Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean that the refs aren't out to get the Hawks!!! Great game MC, you are number one in my book.
