If Kansas fans wondered who would replace Aaron Miles after the 2004-05 season, KU's past two recruiting classes — which have included Chalmers and Russel Robinson — have answered their questions.
Chalmers is a big-time scorer for the Bartlett Golden Bears, but is expected to be more of a pass-first and defensive-minded point guard for the Jayhawks. He dished out 11 assists to just two turnovers in a game during the USA Basketball's Men's Youth Development Festival last June at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. Chalmers finished second in scoring (22.2) and first in steals (17) and three-pointers (16) at the festival, which features the top 48 seniors and juniors. Fellow 2005 freshman Micah Downs was a teammate during the festival.
After averaging 23.2 points, 6 assists, 5.8 rebounds as junior and leading his team to a 23-4 record and a second-place finish in the state tournament, Chalmers choose KU over Arizona, among other schools. He visited the KU campus the same weekend as Downs and 2004 signee C.J. Giles.
Chalmers also led his AAU team to the Tournament of Champions title in North Carolina and played in the NBA Players Camp in Richmond, Va., last year. The camp is reserved for the top 100 players in the country.
