May 23rd hearing set for KU basketball player Thomas Robinson in battery case

Kansas University basketball player Thomas Robinson has a hearing set for May 23 for a misdemeanor battery case in Lawrence Municipal Court after his attorney entered an appearance for him.

Lawrence police cited 20-year-old Robinson, a KU sophomore, Monday in connection with an April 10 altercation outside The Cave, a nightclub inside The Oread hotel, 1200 Oread Ave.

A bouncer alleged that Robinson struck him on the head during a large disturbance about 2 a.m. April 10.

Lawrence police have said Robinson was the only one cited in connection with the incident so far but that it was still under investigation.

Robinson’s attorney in the case, Al Lopes, who played basketball at KU from 1964 to 1966, is the same one who helped negotiate a diversion agreement for another player, Mario Little, in a battery case earlier this year.

Little was accused of pushing his 22-year-old ex-girlfriend into a sink during a Dec. 16 incident.

Anger management counseling was part of Little’s diversion agreement.

We need our guys to stay out of trouble. I don't know if Thomas was responsible for what happened, but he is responsible for allowing himself to be in an environment where something like this had the potential to take place.

Jeremy Bolinger 9 years, 1 month ago

this could actually take place at a variety of places. Should we expect all of our student athletes to eat, sleep, and breath their sport and classes. I have stated, and continue to state, that bouncers in Lawrence are no more than wanna be tough guys that will gang up on innocent people or fabricate the truth because they believe they are gods. Anytime a bouncer puts his hands on someone, especially during a confrontation, they deserve what they get. And, I doubt that T-Rob would do minimal damage to a bouncer if he hit him, which was what he is accused of. I mean seriously, if Thomas Robinson hit you, do you think it wouldnt leave a mark? SERIOUSLY........

WilburNether 9 years, 1 month ago

If a person goes to a place where it is deemed necessary to have bouncers, then he has already placed himself in an environment where something like this has the potential to take place. Duh.

Hail_To_Thee 9 years, 1 month ago

This is a completely ignorant statement. Bar owners hire "Crowd Control" as a show of force to intimidate anyone who thinks about creating trouble. Every once in a while, those "Crowd Control Attendants" like to push their weight around. Its all part of the club scene now. No matter how clean or troubled a bar is. Abe and Jakes is the same way. They're not really "Bouncers." You wanna see bouncers, head out to the Outhouse. They have bouncers.

Your statement makes it sound like every establishment that has a "bouncer" is a bad place to be. Get real.

WilburNether 9 years, 1 month ago

No, your comment is the ignorant one, because you completely missed the point, which, of course, is a common occurrence among pathetic fanbois here. If you go to a place like you describe, you are putting yourself in a situation where bad things can happen. If you don't go to such places, then such bad things will not happen.

Can you hear me now? Good.

Michael Bratisax 9 years, 1 month ago

fanbois? Maybe a reference that I don't know..but don't think so. Can you explain?

Michael Bratisax 9 years, 1 month ago

PS: Paul Marcarelli..who got rich from his many commercials was dropped by Verizon in Sept. last year for his many 'Can You Hear Me Now ' commercials. His was not happy about all the gay references aimed at his Connecticut home i.e. "fan you hear me not you f'ing f_g'?. Although already open ( you know: out of the closet) ..the attention was not going over well. Maybe you should apply. Saying stupid things and getting paid well. I'm sure you could step in without any problem.

WilburNether 9 years, 1 month ago

Can you specifically identify what you did not comprehent? Perhaps I can explain it to you so that you could understand the point. A long shot, I know, but I'd be willing to try.

Michael Bratisax 9 years, 1 month ago

comprehent? please don't say you are a KU grad.

WilburNether 9 years, 1 month ago

That's Phi Beta Kappa graduate to you, Ace.

Michael Bratisax 9 years, 1 month ago

Okay Wilbur ( even your buddy Mr. Ed should get this), most nightclubs that draw a lot of patrons hire bouncers for crowd control, drunkards who are causing problems for the paying customers AND for fights which ARE common when alcohol and testosterone come together. These are just common pains for doing business. Still with me or should I use smaller words? I'm sorry that they intimidate you to such a degree that you cannot enter these facilities..just guessing that some bouncer made you urinate in your pants and ruined your date. Even the Hawk had security when 18 yr olds were allowed to drink. In most cases the presence of bouncers will accomplish these tasks just by being there. Maybe a therapist can help you w/your phobia.

WilburNether 9 years, 1 month ago

Are you EVER going to get it? You're trying to explain why these places are bad. What I've been saying is that if people avoid places where trouble can happen, they won't get in trouble. I do appreciate your help in making my case, as you are simply establishing that what I have been saying is absolutely correct, right on target.

Geez, some people here are so dense.

As a person that reads KUsports.com almost on the daily, and also a person that even reads the message boards in hope of finding some intellectual, useful comments that an out-of-state alum may not get by just reading the articles provided, I my friend have grown tired of having to look at your long, unnecessary, and most importantly, unstimulating comments that seem to pervade this site. As a service to us all, I ask that you start to limit yourself when wanting to voice your opinions on here. Thank you.

Dan Pawlowski 9 years, 1 month ago

+1 , but you taking crap because there are a lot of people living in glass houses here who either can't remember what it was like to be young or have lived with a stick up their butt their entire lives. A lot of bouncers I have encountered are thugs.

baldwinjhawk 9 years, 1 month ago

Why was TRob at the cave? He's 20 years old! Remember when we were 20? Someone said "Hey lets go to the hawk for a beer" and off we went. The difference here is this. TRob is the next superstar in town. Unfortunately for him this can make his a target for thrill seekers or people with another agenda. I don't know whether he smacked someone that night or not. Obviously the cops have some doubt about that fact or they would have taken him downtown immediately. They are letting the courts sort it out as we should also. It just too bad that Thomas didn't have someone with him that can coach him up in life like they do on the basketball court. But as WE remember there were times even when people around us were trying to keep us on course we snuck off the path. We support you TRob and hang in there buddy and try to stay on the path.

Dyrk Dugan 9 years, 1 month ago

i hope it's not already decided. this was a late night bar incident.....about people being struck in the head......how in the world, can he get convicted of battery over this?

i would think that this case may not be as cut and dried as the Little case. so we shall see.

again, i agree with the above.....TRob has to have better judgement. and frankly, our team needs better judgement and probably tougher penalties internally.

DeMontfort 9 years, 1 month ago

And how much is Al Lopes being paid and by whom/what entity? Sounds like another perk for high-flying BB players.

DeMontfort 9 years, 1 month ago

Okay, so who/what entity pays the retainer fee?

Clarence Haynes 9 years, 1 month ago

Don't know DeMontfort, but Al Lopes is a person of high character and integrity. I met him many years ago when he was at KU Law School, just afetr he had returned from military service. Not only is he appropriate to defend TRob, but also, I suspect that he is in a position to give TRob some personal mentoring advice on how a high profile athlete avoids the mine fields (including provocative bouncers).

Michael Thorp 9 years, 1 month ago

I'm surprised that he wasn't cited for under age drinking as well, since he's only 20.

jhox 9 years, 1 month ago

Lawrence police previously said alcohol wasn't involved (at least in relation to Thomas.)

shawk13 9 years, 1 month ago

Since the Cave is 21+ how is it that Thomas got in to begin with? No way T-Rob can successfully use a fake ID in Lawrence. If I was the Cave's management I would find it difficult to turn away the popularity that comes with having basketball players at my nightclub. It seems logical that they let him in knowing he is underage... so either they marked him as underage at the door or they were knowingly providing a minor with alcohol (and from the report it seems like he wasn't drinking, which is good).

rockchalk_dpu 9 years, 1 month ago

I've been in there before and run into the players on the night after a game. I was surprised given their high profile nature and the risk to both them and the bar, but I can't really comment on whether they were drinking or just there with those players who could actually drink.

Brian Martin 9 years, 1 month ago

Every thing happened outside of the club. It never states that TRob was inside.

shawk13 9 years, 1 month ago

IIRC it said something about the fight "spilling out of the club," but you may be right. Regardless though, I have seen several comments about the underage drinking thing, even in an ESPN blog. My comment was more directed at that crowd. One thing is for sure, we don't know the complete story here.

Sam Constance 9 years, 1 month ago

You sound almost eager to see someone else get in trouble... more fan "realism"?

Sam Constance 9 years, 1 month ago

I want to know why only one person--who just happens to be the most high-profile participant--from the altercation, has been cited in connection with the occurrence.

Clearly Robinson just showed up and started punching people... /sarcasm.

Cameron Schienebeck 9 years, 1 month ago

I agree. It happened "during a large disturbance" yet there is only one person sited. Seems a little odd.

Jeremy Bolinger 9 years, 1 month ago

I cannot figure out why more bouncers are charged with battery. Seems just because you drink a little, no matter what the circumstance, that any bouncer can grab you and escort you out. How is that any different than slightly putting your hands on a cop and getting charged with battery on an officer? Seems like the same thing, just interpreted differently. God I LOVE this country and our pussy laws.

Hank Cross 9 years, 1 month ago

If you read the espn story about Selby, http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?columnist=forde_pat&id=6407176 , there also seems to a possible question about how Selby could get all of his school work done so he could complete the semester.

I don't if there's anything going wrong, but all these negative stories may sooner or later invite an NCAA investigation. And the NCAA has no problem ringing a program up for " not fostering a culture of compliance" whatever the hell that means.

DeMontfort 9 years, 1 month ago

How many times do we have to ask this question before the LJW does some work to try to answer it?

jayhawKUr 9 years, 1 month ago

Great question! I'm wondering why it wasn't published here 2 weeks ago when it happened. Thing is though, recruiting period is still hot and heavy - gosh, I love Daniels!

100 9 years, 1 month ago

Here's the deal....

If Thomas Robinson truly was just breaking up a fight, the amount of work an attorney has to do is minimal.

If Thomas really just broke up a fight, this seriously can be billed for a total of about $300.

And it's not like he has to pay it immediately.

Like any business, law offices have billing plans that can stretch over a couple years.

On the contrary I would say having Lopes as his attorney is a very good sign. It means he really did just break up a fight at a Purple club.

By the way if you live in Lawrence...

Don't go to this club (the Cave).

It's owned by a Purple. Not saying purples had anything to do with it, but if there's no reason to feed a Purple club that apparently has some bad energy towards our university.

If you're the owner... And you have a choice between a huge Jayhawk bouncer & a purple bouncer....

Who do you choose?

And will he keep your bar out of the headlines?

Also...

Any chance your "employee" can possibly stir up some bad headlines towards a team you don't like that's beaten you 25 of the last 27 times at your own arena?

Any LJW writer going to do a story on the suspiciousness of the owner of this club & who he hires?

bradynsdad 9 years, 1 month ago

It's funny how the original report had stated that witnesses saw Robinson trying to break up the fight when it first started. I guess that part has been taken out. Hopefully this will be a good wake up call for Thomas to realize it only takes one dumb instance to cost yourself a future.

Jeremy Bolinger 9 years, 1 month ago

His future is not blown. See Michael Vick

MR_L 9 years, 1 month ago

LARGE DISTURBANCE = MANY PEOPLE 1 PERSON CITED AND EXCUSED = THOMAS ROBINSON

I hope this happens to all of you naysayers at least once in your life. I hope you have to lawyer up to defend some bull just like this some day. Then have people call you a thug and other names. Sad. Like they first reported he was breaking it up and pulling people off, on e his friends was thee one actually getting "lippy" with the bouncers. Depending on the club or bar you go to bouncers can be more harmful than helpful with their attitudes.

Thomas Robinson is in college, enjoying the college life like the rest of us had thee chance to. Let the man live.

HawkKlaw 9 years, 1 month ago

What did TRob expect to happen at a place like the Cave? That's one of the several places in Lawrence known for excessive amounts of douchebaggery. You would think that it would be a no-brainer to stay as far away as possible...Think about it, they had to put fake grass out front because of all the toxic Axe fumes emanating from inside da clubb!

baldwinjhawk 9 years, 1 month ago

HELLO IT'S OWNED BY A K-STATER.... DON'T PATRONIZE THAT BAR.

rwhawk 9 years, 1 month ago

"toxic Axe fumes" Hilarious! Nice work!

REHawk 9 years, 1 month ago

Dumb 2 a.m. decision, Thomas. Reflects poorly on your own character, the reputation of the coaching staff and the team, and probably will affect negatively the flow of support offered to Jayla. You have voiced the desire to be a team leader next season. Thru your intense play, cheery personality and family tragedies, you have won the strong support and following of an emotional Jayhawk Nation. Get your mind back on responsible action and don't blow the best of all possible opportunities during your time in Lawrence. Thousands of fans are counting on you, bigtime. You cannot lead the life of an ordinary harem-scarem student who takes occasional careless timeouts from the stresses of university life. Find and maintain outlets which will not lead to troubles.

Janet Olin 9 years, 1 month ago

Would be nice to hear/see the facts from all parties involved, not just the bouncers, before jumping to conclusions. 'Large disturbance', but only one person charged (a very recognizable one)?? Also, this club is a town place in a new hotel, not one of the off campus dives or a place known for trouble. I won't mind criticism if there indeed is factual evidence of TRob's wrongdoing, but the whole scenario as it has been reported so far sounds very fishy.

milehighhawk 9 years, 1 month ago

I'm sure they are taking care of this internally.

Better that than calling attention to the negative stories through the media.

Milehigh, please don't respond to anything the incredible d-bag IrishDaddy says. He's posted the same link numerous times and has repeatedly ignored any attempt at a logical discussion. Maybe if we just ignore him, he'll crawl back under the rock he came from.

tauck 9 years, 1 month ago

Just a couple of things Take away the bars liquor license for allowing a minor to to drink. Site TROB for underage drinking and all the penalties that come with it And for Gods sake coach Self, can you get your house in order. This is starting to turn into, not just a circus, but a 3 ring circus!!! Like it or not, you need to lay the Hammer down. Your players will do exactly what you allow them to do. If you crack down, your problems will disappear, if you remain status quo, we will visit these problems over and over again. ATTITUDE REFLECTS LEADERSHIP

akl6593 9 years, 1 month ago

Unless there is a new report TRob wasn't drinking...Also, I can't imagine that Bill Self is "allowing" his players to engage in this behavior...he can't keep them under lock and key 24/7. I agree that people shouldn't put themselves in bad situations but I don't think going out with a group of your friends shows some serious personality disorder and/or a lack of leadership by the coach. We don't know and may never know what actually happened so don't jump to conclusions.

HawkKlaw 9 years, 1 month ago

If TRob had been drinking, it would have been reported that he was under the influence. Derp.

Sam Constance 9 years, 1 month ago

When was the last time you heard of a police officer differentiating between an 20-year-old who had been "drinking" and a 20-year-old who was "under the influence"?

Pretty sure the law says the legal limit for anyone who isn't 21 is 0.00%. Troll and hate all you want, but at least be intelligent about it. Come up with some jabs that make a damn bit of sense.

I'm trying to figure out if you were born yesterday, or if your depth of knowledge only goes back as far as the existence of your trolling profile (April 15th, 2011).

actorman 9 years, 1 month ago

tauck, what exactly has Self been doing to "allow" his players to "engage in this behavior???" He suspended Brady for an entire semester. He suspended Mario for six games. He suspended Marcus for his actions in the Cal game. And he suspended Tyshawn, when we don't even know what Tyshawn did. How much more would you expect him to do?

In fact, I would hazard a guess that Self has disciplined his team more than a lot of other coaches would have in similar situations (can you say Frank Martin?). No doubt it's been a rough couple of years, but it's still not enough at this point to establish any kind of a pattern. And the jury is still out on what exactly (if anything) TRob did. Unlike narrow-minded imbeciles like IrishDaddy, I am open to finding out more about what happened. If TRob is indeed found to have engaged in the type of behavior that's been ALLEGED (as in NOT PROVEN), then he should face a tough suspension. But let's see how things play out.

gardenjay 9 years, 1 month ago

unfair treatment? open your eyes, the system has private prisons and everyone should be worried. Lucky he's a celebrity.

actorman 9 years, 1 month ago

That's ludicrous! What should he be in prison for? Because he hit a guy who didn't have any injuries?!? As others have pointed out, do you honestly believe that if you were hit by TRob, you wouldn't have ANY injuries???

actorman 9 years, 1 month ago

And BTW, considering that there was a big scuffle and he was the ONLY person who was cited, maybe his being a celebrity actually hurt him in this case, did you ever consider that?

Lance Hobson 9 years, 1 month ago

C'mon TRob, this is college not the hood.

Ty Mar 9 years, 1 month ago

Bouncer crying because he wasn't the biggest dude anymore. If he got hit by T-Rob, he would have had injuries. Lettuce be cereal.

OK but seriously-Why go the cave???
