Basketball writers group gives Self national coach of the year award

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association today gave Bill Self its national coach of the year award.

The USBWA, in honoring Self, acknowledged that he "led Kansas to a Big 12 regular season title despite not having one starter return from last year’s national championship team."

The award for Self marks the second time a Kansas coach has been named national coach of the year by the USBWA. Roy Williams was honored in 1990 by the USBWA.

KU will face Michigan State in the Sweet 16 on Friday in Indianapolis.

Ho-hum...........yet another award. Time to put in another fireplace mantle at the Self household to support the hardware.

Coach Self is the man! Keep it up. The Final Four is in sight and I can't believe I'm saying that this year again!

Just beat MSU

Note to Self: MSU offense is severely crippled by the Triangle & 2 Defense. Check out the tape on the USC game...

By the way, Coach, I have an old MSU friend I talked to last night -- he says MSU will "absolutely destroy KU's weak perimeter defense, just like Baylor & Texas Tech did."

Of the topic but KU fans must take a look at this.

Also, a NYU film student did a documentary on him and put it on line.

Congratulations Coach Self! And I like the sound of Lance Stephenson suiting up for the Crimson and Blue next season...especially if Sherron and Cole both come back :)

Eurekahwk 10 years, 10 months ago

Anyone else feeling the Final Four? We can do this. If slowing down Sherron and Cole was so easy, then we wouldn't have 27 wins and be playing the second weekend of March Madness.

stravinsky 10 years, 10 months ago

I like the sound of that. I do wonder how the scholarship situation will work out, since it looks like Sherron and Aldrich are both coming back (yeahhh!!!) but I figure if Self is still recruiting the guy he must have a plan to work some money magic.

Oh man... The hawks have a pretty good chance to make an elite 8 or even another final four this year, and yet I can't stop thinking about next year... Aldrich. Withey. Morris twins. Sherron. Taylor. Johnson. Robinson. Little. Appleton. Morningstar. Releford. And hopefully Stephenson. And most importantly, Bill Self. These guys are legit.

Great job coach! Man, he has really been great for KU. I feel bad for the pressure that ensued from those two tough losses to Bucknell and Bradley. The tourney can be very feast of famine that way.

BTW, I can't read the zagsblog post - it's blocked on my gov't computer. What's the story?

Not trying to pick on you stravinsky but who cares? Self knows what he's doing and wouldn't sign him if he didn't have a plan. The question just keeps getting posed on this website as if Self doesn't already know this information.

Congrats Coach Self. You are the greatest coach in America and don't need a stupid award to justify it. You have the National Championship trophy and your new hardware should be trickling in over the next few weeks.

It talks about Lance Stephenson is highly favor to Kansas. It talks about what he wants to do. He wants to have a chance to win a NCAA tournament and Kansas is the only school that gives him a chance to win NCAA tournament next year. Stephenson is ranked #1 player in the 2009 class in one of the poll... It talks about he had already picked the school and he will be declaring it on March 31st or April 1st. (McDonald's all american game)

You're right on the money in your post about a re-run of the TT and Baylor games. Think about how we looked defensively, as a team against our first two tournament opponents. If we don't make adjustments in practices the next two days, we'll be reminded of those "off-days" around 8:45 Friday night. I love our offensive sets. But we need balance to win the big ones. That's what last year's team excelled in.

What an honor for HCBS. Who was it that had been talking about Mike Anderson being a contender for COY honors?

On to Indy.....

Congrats Bill Self

Stephenson will come to Kansas. . .think about it, he was supposed to announce last weekend at MSG after winning his 4th city title in a row. If he were going to St Johns(I truely believe Maryland is out of the picture) he would've announced it then and there, in front of the NY faithful in MSG. what better place to announce you know?

He's a Jayhawk.

Possibility for scholarship situation...Since Reed was on the all big twelve academic team, maybe he gives up his basketball scholarship and the school gives him an academic scholarship, kind of like what Matt K. got for five years.

jayhawkboogeyman 10 years, 10 months ago

The boogeyman agrees that Coach Self is great. The guy has a great chance to reach 1,000 career wins, hang a couple dozen conference banners, and a handful of FF and NC banners before his time is up. Time for Sherron to shine and carry this team past MSU.
