Meier, Sharp could miss MU-KU game

Kansas has bye week, preps for Missouri

The Jayhawks fell from Big 12 North title contention after the 35-7 loss against Texas. The team has this week off as they prepare for Missouri.

Come Thanksgiving weekend, Kansas University’s football team very well might be headed into a gunfight without two of its top firearms.

Kansas coach Mark Mangino said Monday morning that injured starters Jake Sharp and Kerry Meier haven’t practiced this week, and he was unsure whether they’ll be available for the Jayhawks’ Nov. 29 game against rival Missouri at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium.

“I’m hopeful; I can’t say that I’m confident,” said Mangino of the likelihood the two will be ready to go against the No. 12 Tigers. “I’m hopeful they’ll be back. Talking with the trainer, it’s a situation where they’ve just got to get a lot of treatment and (see) how fast they heal up.”

Meier and Sharp left Saturday’s 35-7 loss to Texas during the first half after sustaining undisclosed injuries on separate plays, and neither was made available to reporters following the game.

Both have been integral parts of the team’s offense this season. Since the start of Big 12 play this season, Sharp has been the conference’s second-leading rusher and has compiled season totals of 748 yards and 10 touchdowns. Meier, meanwhile, is the team’s leader in receptions and was recently named a finalist for the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the nation’s top receiver.

“What I can tell you is that they didn’t practice (Sunday),” said Mangino, whose team is 6-5 (3-4 in the Big 12). “I don’t anticipate them to practice on Tuesday, either. And from there it will just be what the trainer thinks. We’ll kind of go day-to-day with them. But they have not practiced, and we don’t see them practicing at least through Tuesday.”

Pinkel pleased to play in K.C.: As far as Missouri coach Gary Pinkel is concerned, the Border Showdown can remain in Kansas City for the foreseeable future.

Pinkel on Monday praised the series’ current arrangement — a two-year deal between Missouri and Kansas to hold their annual matchup at Arrowhead Stadium — and insisted that he wouldn’t be opposed to extending the deal a few years more.

“To say that we’re never going to have the games back in Columbia or Lawrence, I would not want to go that far,” said Pinkel, whose team has a bye week this week. “But I certainly think it’s healthy. I think there’s certainly a tremendous amount of pluses to it financially, and also for the fan bases.”

A decision on whether the schools will opt to renew the Arrowhead deal has yet to be announced, although KU senior associate athletic director Larry Keating said earlier this season that the schools likely would reach a decision on the matter around the time of this year’s game.

We'll be fine without Jake, but that would help tremendously if he could play. But we NEED Meier. He is our go-to guy in short yardage situations.

Yeah lets put Sherron out there....then we can lose another KU athlete to injury for a game that may not matter who we start.

I would be stunned if these guys don't play vs. MU. Biggest game of the year can help you play through the pain. Plus, they have two weeks instead of one to heal. I wouldn't lose sleep over this - just yet.

This is just Mangino trying to deke Pinkel's preparation for the Hawks. They'll play. This is the same thing as what we saw before Texas Tech (Mangino: "I'm not going to make any drastic changes to the secondary at this point") Reality: The entire secondary was shuffled for the TTU game).

Meier bent his neck at a severe angle while getting sandwiched across the middle. Since it's day to day, he must not have had a head injury. Sharp was grasping hip joint, again, not a easy injury to get over, but both sound like strains. A week off could be good for both before practicing next week. Strains heal much quicker than broken bones and snapped ligaments, especially with medical trainers speeding up the process. They'll both play.

Meier has had a bad hammy all season and Sharp took some hard licks-- didn't notice the hip joint, but definitely rib shots.

Just need a couple key players, some weights and some subs. We should be pretty good next year, there's no reason to be down about 6-6 or 7-5 this year. We've been beaten by some really good teams and we have a lot to build on.

Like someone said above - there's no way these guys aren't playing against Mizzou.. And when the Big Man says they haven't practiced all week - it's Monday... It's not like teams practice in pads on Sunday anyway, so they missed today's practice - so what...Mangino knows what he's doing and he's definitely trying to get at Mizzou after this decrepit report surfaced - http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/2... - it's extremely speculative and I wouldn't put it past some moronic Mizzou fans to start some mess like that...Say what you want - and there's a lot of haters out there - so-called KU fans included - but we can and will beat Mizzou in 11 days... We finish this season on a two-game win streak heading into next season, we'll be fine... We're a young, dinged up team this year and it's shown throughout the season... Beat Mizzou and it'll make this season more than bearable...Rock Chalk

I wish people would stop saying that if we go 6-6, we will not go to a bowl game. That is wrong and it was a perfect storm of things happening a couple years back when it did happen. This year the big 12 does not have the number of 6 win teams to fill its allocment of bowl obligations, so everyone with 6 wins will make it (from the Big 12). Then I think we even will have two bowl games that the Big 12 will be forced to not send someone to and they will get filled with schools from other confrences. So even at 6-6, we are going to play in a bowl!

This year has been frustrating, but the Big XII could turn the top 3 of any other conference into a 4 or 5 loss team.We the fans have to stay interested for the program to grow, three of our losses are to the current # 2, 3, and 5 teams!I am excited for next year, we will be better, AND we get to stomp Duke on the turf!

The season is not over yet guys. Bowl game or not we must beat MU.As for Sharp and Meier playing, there is no way these guys will miss out. They may not be 100% effective but they will get game time. Hopefully it won't be to the detriment of the team.Next year we lose some key personnel and have a similar schedule. Let's hope Bowen and the boys can improve in the offseason or else the result could be the same as this year.

Rest up boys. Get better for the bowl game. We have players who can step in and still give us a chance to beat MU. Especially with an extra week to practice the slightly new look.Wilson, Briscoe and Fields are obviously big-time threats who will be getting more looks. Quigley could dish out some more punishment. And you never know what player might flourish with a rare opportunity. Raymond Brown, Rod Harris, Gary Green, Steven Foster? How about Tim Biere? Maybe we finally get a big play from the kicking team. I could see Patterson going house in his first and last game of his freshman regular season. So many areas that have been suppressed by relentlessly going back to the Meier/Sharp well. Quite honestly I've been waiting to see some different looks just to see who might step up. A little shake-up, with a week to prepare, might be just the thing Kansas needs to wake up and regain some confidence. Reesing has a week to figure out what he will do without old reliable in there.I hate that they are injured. I would never hope for that. All I'm saying is this could be a blessing in disguise. It happens quite a bit. Just look at the Chiefs with Thigpen and Bradley, and a no-name defense. They haven't been winning, but their level of improvement over a four week period has been unmatched in the NFL. They shook it up a lot. KU just needs a little.

That NFP post on tension between Mangino and Kansas has to be about the dumbest I've seen all year. Look at their reasons...- "Mangino watching this week’s practices from the press box instead of his usual place on the field."Gee, a coach looking at his team from a different perspective - two weeks before the next game!!! Shocking.- "Mangino’s demeanor towards the team has been more relaxed, as opposed to his usual stern approach." Yeah, when your team is real young and physically beat up it's always good to chew them out. - "Mangino did not show up to a staff meeting this week."Maybe he has something personal to take care of? Mangino's one of the highest paid coaches and KU just built him state of the art facilities. He's not going anywhere.

oh meastland, how stupid thou art. Hawks are in a bowl already.Last year was no fluke, dummy. Perhaps you forget who we lost. Start with Talib, Collins, and McClinton. We beat all the ones we could not beat the year before, save zoo. We beat highly ranked V tech. No fluke, dufas. That team and defense would have fared better than this year's team. They were real and you are not. as usual, i suspect some commenters are actually from missouri.
