Van Treese impresses at Jayhawk Invitational

A half dozen top 100 players from the class of 2009 took to Allen Fieldhouse last weekend. Among those players listing KU as a possible college choice: a four-star forward out of the Hoosier State.

Kansas University senior basketball center Sasha Kaun has chosen Justin Zanik of New Jersey-based ASM Sports as his professional sports agent.

ASM represents several NBA players, including Kevin Garnett and Chauncey Billups. As reported earlier, Darnell Jackson will be represented by Montgomery Sports Group of San Antonio and Brandon Rush by Priority Sports and Entertainment of Chicago.

Barnstorming at LHS: KU's seniors will hold a Barnstorming Tour game at 7:30 p.m. on May 14 at Lawrence High. An autograph session will be held from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m.

Tickets are $10 and go on sale at 11 a.m. today in the LHS cafeteria. The event is a benefit for the Devin McAnderson Medical Fund.

Morgan madness: J'Mison "Bobo" Morgan's AAU coach told Rivals.com on Monday the 6-foot-11 senior from Dallas South Oak Cliff High will ask for a release from his LSU letter of intent. Morgan's high school coach told Rivals on Monday night he expected Morgan to remain with LSU. Morgan chose LSU over UCLA, KU and others in the early signing period.

Twins update: Rich Marcucci, vice president of Apex Academies, told Adam Zagoria of Zagsblog he believed incoming KU freshmen Marcus and Markieff Morris "will be qualified" for admission at KU after their SAT scores are returned and their final grades compiled at the New Jersey prep school. He said all should be finalized within five weeks.

Popular coach: If this keeps up, paparazzi soon will be following KU basketball coach Bill Self across the country. Self recently earned mention in the "Sightings" section of "Norm: Vegas Confidential" - a celebrity gossip column in the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

"Bill Self, head coach for the NCAA basketball champion Kansas Jayhawks, was congratulated at every turn after arriving on a flight Friday morning from Kansas City," Norm Clarke wrote in a column that also had tidbits on Lindsay Lohan, Jessica Simpson, Tony Romo, Ashley Olsen, Tina Turner, Michael Jackson, Mena Suvari, Dennis Miller and Oprah Winfrey.

Self was in Vegas two weekends ago to scout a pair of AAU Tournaments.

On Sunday, there was a Self sighting in the Lexington Herald Leader. Self played golf Thursday with coaches Billy Gillispie (Kentucky), Norm Roberts (St. John's) and Doc Sadler (Nebraska) at Valhalla course in Louisville, columnist Jerry Tipton wrote.

Self also attended Saturday's Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.

Trophy talk: KU's 2008 national championship trophy is now on display in KU's Hall of Athletics.

See, Bobo? You should have gone with KU while you could. Who the hell would pick LSU over KU or UCLA anyway?

KU 11 years, 7 months ago

Looks like Morgan might be headed to UCLA. The Big Man cupboard is a little too full at KU for Morgan to choose KU.

hawkitup 11 years, 7 months ago

Any chance of us landing Morgan after he is released from his letter of intent?

KEITHMILES05 11 years, 7 months ago

Saw the trophy last Friday night. It isn't near as elaborate as the 88 one. That's inflation for you.

I would hardly consider our Big Man cupboard full here. We have Cole, of course, who will be the starting 5 next season, but after that, we have all freshmen. If Morgan thinks he's good enough to beat out Quintrell Thomas and whichever of the Morris twins who plays down low (if memory serves, one is considered a small forward, the other a power forward), he'll get significant minutes next season.Quintrell is likely a 4 year man, so he'll be given time to develop (rather like Darnell Jackson). If Morgan is the player he's supposed to be, he'll come in and contribute right away. Of course, that would mean that Mario is gone for sure, which I'm not convinced he's not anyway. It will be a very different team next year, that is for sure.

Morgan is a slug.... he belongs at UCLA... they run a slug offense. Certainly we don't want to move toward a half court "ONLY" offense.... we depend on defense and steals to initiate our transition game. Do we think Morgan will contribute to that style of play?

Uh, sevenyearhawk - doesn't he have his own story? No need to merge him into a basketball story, they gave him his own. If you're annoyed about this being the headline with the picture - get over it. Baseball had the headlines the last couple of days and, sorry, but the national champion basketball team is probably always going to headline after a middle of the pack baseball team.

You have to remember that Morgan is slow. I'm sure he'll be a solid player, but I don't think KU should kill themselves after this loss.

I may be wrong but isn't the current blueprint for success to have plenty of bigs for a deep rotation? Constant pounding in the paint? I would think with the three point line finally moving out from the Jr. High area the ability to play inside becomes even more important.

Ya it was great to see Julian play some quality minutes in a meaningful game. And also very weird to see him shooting 3's!

Morgan can't run like Cole and Darnell right now. But, we should all have plenty of faith in Andrea Cudy and our strength and conditioning staff. They can get him in KU Basketball shape by November.I don't think Morgan will choose KU because he doesn't even know if we'll have a scholarship available for him. I definitely could see him going to UCLA, but as of now he's still at LSU.

The Big Man cupboard is full.....RELATIVE to what UCLA offers right now. Why would you go to KU when there are 4 bigs already when you could be THE man at UCLA? It's about PT when you think you're a one-and-done.And yes, you CAN have too many Bigs. You can only realistically play 4 Bigs any significant minutes. Number 5, 6, 7 and 8 are not going to be happy sitting on the bench. Why should Self fall all over himself to RE-recruit a kid that shunned us once? The kid already showed he can't make the best choice when it's staring him in the face.Besides, we REALLY could use some balance in the recruiting classes. This one is already very, very large. Granted, a couple of them are jucos, but having SIX freshmen this year and only 2 or 3 scholarships available next year wouldn't be ideal.

Self also played at the celebrity pro am at the Bryon Nelson in Dallas 2 weeks ago with some family friends of mine.

On a slightly more positive note, did anyone see Julian Wright last night?? He played 12 minutes & got 6 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist & 1 steal (from Tony Parker too!). Those 6 points he got were from 2 three pointers that he nailed! It's nice to see that he's doing well in the NBA.

ChicagoJHawk 11 years, 7 months ago

Is it just me or is anyone else concerned about whether or not the Morris twins will qualify academically?

Drew Bender 11 years, 7 months ago

Plastic... The strength coach is Andrea Hudy

flipborder02 11 years, 7 months ago

Rockcalk you are stupid you obviously havent seen Bobo play he can run just as good as Cole or Darnell.

sevenyearhawk 11 years, 7 months ago

Hey this is a fine story and all ...but it would have been nice for only the second Jayhawk baseball player to be named conference player of the week to get a little more press ...just sayin'

OK, BACK TO THE TOPIC OF SASHA KAUN, which this article was written about. Congrats on the selection Sasha, I wish you the best of luck in your future basketball adventures. Whether it be here or Russia, I know you'll make a fine professional basketball player. Thanks for all the years you put in here in Lawrence. It is truely appreciated.

Chicago: Yeah, saw Julian last night. He was killin' it!

Here is a good article on the upcoming NBA draft regarding the five best decisions to enter the draft and the five worst.http://collegebasketball.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=804790

kataboom 11 years, 7 months ago

yeah morgan is too slow for ku's offense. que sera sera.

BCRavenJHawkfan 11 years, 7 months ago

For any forward/center prospect they just need to look at Kaun's improvement under Manning to understand how the game should be played.I also hope that any recruits can please, please make free throws.

rockchalkjayhawk4ku11 11 years, 7 months ago

wow I knew LSU wasnt a good fit for morgan. Is there any chance we can still pick him up?
