— The time has come for Kansas University junior guard Sherron Collins to make this his team. In order to accomplish that, Collins first must make this a team, not a collection of individuals.

Collins didn’t do that Saturday afternoon in the Sprint Center, where Kansas lost to UMass, 61-60, in front of 17,252 fans.

Too often, during a forgettable first half in which he made one of nine shots and misfired on all three three-point attempts, Collins responded to a UMass guard draining a three by trying to get all the points back immediately. It didn’t work. Not much did for Kansas, which is 6-0 in Allen Fieldhouse and 1-2 in the Sprint Center.

The freshmen played like freshmen, and all parties concerned said that was because they have practiced like freshmen, which is why they sat for long stretches. Bill Self made his feelings known about that in the loudest way a coach can, by playing less talented players in their place. The coach wasn’t as disappointed in the performance of Collins.

“He’s got to get where he trusts guys more,” Self said of Collins. “He’s out there trying, but he tried to do a little too much in some key moments. But he was at least out there, in my opinion, competing very hard.”

Collins always competes hard. Basketball is too important to him to do otherwise. It’s his ticket to a better life than he knew growing up on the wild side of Chicago.

His wisdom wasn’t razor-sharp with the ball in his hands, but his effort led to him holding quick, hot-shooting UMass guard Ricky Harris to four second-half points after he scored 14 in the first half.

Collins had just one turnover in 38 minutes, but also made just six of 21 shots, including one of seven three-pointers. His quickness and strength enable him to get a shot just about whenever he desires. In this one, that was more a curse than a blessing.

“I think I pressed a little bit,” he said. “I think I pressed too much.”

His tendency to fly solo too often is a correctable flaw. He’s a proven winner. He’ll figure it out. But will enough of his talented teammates pour as much effort into each possession for this team to develop into one that can win on the road in the Big 12 with any sort of regularity?

Projecting Collins to earn first-team All-Big 12 honors and to develop into a guard who does a better job of showing he believes in teammates isn’t difficult.

Guessing what sort of freshman season KU will get from Marcus Morris, no worse than the fourth-most talented player on the team (Collins, Cole Aldrich, Tyshawn Taylor), presents a greater challenge.

So far, learning to play basketball doesn’t look as important to Morris as to Collins. Starting Matt Kleinmann ahead of him once didn’t trigger intensity. Neither did benching him for the first 10:40 of Saturday’s second half, penalized with others for not following the scouting report. Such disciplinary acts didn’t prevent Marcus from, on consecutive possessions late in the second half, jacking up a three-pointer and fouling a shooter from 18 feet out in the shot clock’s last second.

Nobody said trusting teammates with that sort of judgment will come easily for Collins, but it’s the best path for him and the team to take in order to become a team.

I think it will take time for this team to develop. Experience and chemistry were we lost from last years team. U-Mass was able to collapse around Collins and Aldrich. They had so many weapons last year that the opposing teams could not focus on one or two individuals to stop us.I did like the mohawks but without the shooting star.

we're going to struggle. it's just that simple. this team has tough stretch of games coming up, and with the Big 12, we could go 4-6, or 3-7 easily. The twins just arent' that good yet, and Tyshawn goes through his stretches. They're freshman! and they're being asked to carry the load. well, they can't do it....yet. and if they don't figure it out this year, a la Wright, Rush and Chalmers three years ago, then we won't make the tournament. And what of Relaford? a big article in the Star yesterday talked about getting him more minutes. he played 4 yesterday. Get him in the game! or are they just waiting on Little. it's a bit surprising that Relaford can't get on the court with this outfit.

I agree that Sherron is trying to do too much, but it is pretty clear that Coach Self doesn't "trust" the freshmen, or he wouldn't be benching them all the time. As for Releford, he isn't seeing minutes for the same reason the rest aren't...he isn't playing defense. That is the bottom line with Self and always will be.

Yes they are freshman, but I would hope that you can make lay ups at the D-1 level. How many more games do we have to see Taylor miss shots most Jr. High kids will make. I can't say that this group has played any worse than the Chalmers, Wright and Rush group did after 9 games. That group zoned out a lot during their three years. I still think these kids will be okay once they've been humbled enough. Maybe yesterday started that process.Collins is the next Brandon Rush. Self is going to continue to tell him he has to be the leader and he'll press. If anyone should have sat yesterday it was Collins. I'd like to see Releford in place of Reed or Morningstar. And the Mohawks? Obviously, Collins isn't ready to lead and Taylor may need a different role model. This isn't MU it's KU.

Releford sits because he is definitely not ready to play. He is clueless re the offense and the defense. Reed and Morningstar play because they are veterans who have enough experience to know where they are supposed to be. I hope that Travis starts showing something in practice and will play before the season ends. If not, he may consider looking elsewhere...

Everyone, including and especially Collins, needs to relax and see where we are. The Hawks lost 6 players to the NBA draft. six players out of a team that can only have five on the court at one time. That was magical. This is the epitome of "re-building".Collins took WAY too many shots yesterday and the freshman weren't exactly poised. That's life. Collins needed to show more patience, pass, set up plays, work the inside so that the long shots were opened up. Too many times he ran down the court, took it all the way in by himself or just shot from the cheap seats. Make the freshman step up, force them to take a chance and be better. When you see some of the not so great play, just think about all the experience these young men are getting and how great things will be in 2 years. We'll be ok.

Sherron "I am a star" Collins took too many low percentage shots. On many occasions, he was not waiting for the offense to set up before shooting the ball. In two games this season, he has taken more than 20 shots and we lost both of them. Coach Self has asked him to take a lot of shots but not low percentage shots. Coach Self values each offensive possesion, unfortunately Sherron has not bought in to it. I am sure that he trusts his teammates but he is trying to play one on one (may be to make a point to the NBA scouts). I feel bad for the freshmen that they do not have a good leader to learn from.If he continues not to play team ball (KU style), he will expose his drawbacks to the league and thereby hurting his chances in the NBA draft. We may see him back next year.

I am disappointed in the Morris twins. They play as if they are still in high school with a 4-6 inch height advantage on anyone. I wish Kaun and D-Block were still around to beat the cr*p out of them in practice.

pahawk1, i agree with your sentiments about Collins. However, if Bill Self valued every offensive possession, Collins probably wouldn't earn a single minute in any game.

yeah, that's what I thought...Chicken Little is alive and his crew are chirping loudly after a loss...I've said it before:This team is very young and inexperienced. Understand and accept that or you will all be very disappointed. This team will tease us with it's talent and then have bad games. It's part of learning and growing up to D1 Basketball. It's not that the criticisms are that wrong, but they make those posting them sound like unrealistic and whining spoiled brats. How many freshmen last year played any kind of significant minutes??? None! Cole played but wasn't much of a factor, except in one game. The young and inexperienced players are being asked to raise their game. It is a work in progress....I'm proud that our team didn't fold up and quit when they got hit by the UMass run, and when they kept getting a little cushion. We fought back after having played horribly, and had a shot to win the game on the last possession. Believe it or not, it's not the end of the world. If our team keeps working and learning, they still could be very good towards the end of this year. I think Coach is pretty good, and the players are talented, so I think it is likely!Rock Chalk!

kvskubball, I don't disagree with your comments, but I was hoping for a little more from this group after nine games. Massachusetts, in my opinion, is the type of team that would finish in the bottom half of the Big 12, right up there with Iowa State and Nebraska. I think our problem is mostly mental, keeping our focus and intensity, and keeping and our wits about us under pressure, and all that comes with maturity. So, grow up fast team, the road gets much steeper starting now.

That was just ugly. How do you lose to an awful UMass team in your own backyard? How about Collins playing the worst game Iever. His shot selection is ridiculas.. What's with the stupid haircut? Anytime players go with the mohawk...they're mentally unstable & they end up playing the same way. Collins let's clean it up buddy & how about not bringing Taylor down with you. For Jimmney sakes...your auditioning for the NBA this year & u look like a clown. What NBA executive will want to give you million. . You're supposed to be a leader, not look like some idiot on the street. It's time to button up....not slack off. Oh yeah...Morningstar, really? I mean really? Enough already Self. He's so not a good college player. He cannot even make wide open shots & that's supposed to be his worth. Besides Collins, he's the second reason we're losing. How about giving Releford & Thomas a chance, when Morningstar plays so horrible. Jees!Hopefully...Mario Little is good, we need him, however Self is probably going to teach him a lesson, so he won't play. How many of these kids are going to tranfer due to Morningstar getting all the PT.Damn it's frustrating! Just look at who Umass has lost to this year. We should have just thrown the ball inside to Aldrich everytime down, instead of having Morningstar huck up bricks. Ok I'm done...I feel better.

Obviously English is not michaelaho's first language. Either that or he is in third grade, which would also explain his inability to grasp a realistic understanding of the game of basketball.Do you guys seriously think that Bill Self, a man who has won a national championship, and get's paid millions of dollars a year to coach basketball at one of the most prestigious programs in the country doesn't know what he's doing?I would cite, as I have before, that he is the one who is getting paid to coach, and you (the collective you of haters and complainers) conversely are not...Complain about the players all you want, I agree that Sherron screwed the pooch on Saturday, I agree that those frosh need to quit playing like they think their crap doesn't stink, but to challenge Self's reasoning for playing Sherron, or Morningstar or anyone else is the moronic ramblings of an idiot. I'm sure Bill knows Brady isn't making shots...but there's a reason he's playing him. Probably because nobody else is making shots either.Oh, and another thing...after losing half our team, don't expect to win a NC this year. That's just dumb...that's like something a KSU fan would think.

...all I have to say is, Releford must be doing something seriously wrong behind the scenes or in practice. He gets no minutes, yet seems to be a spark of energy for the team when he is in. Also, why is Brady Morningstar getting so many minutes, I mean geeze...it makes me want to rip my hair out. Keeping him in the game is like the KC Chiefs saying Damon Haurd or Tyler Thigpen is the future of the Chiefs...Come on now, as long as Brady Morningstar is starting, we are not a top 25 team! (btw, I only say this about Morningstar because last time I criticized him on the forums he jacked up like 20 points the next game, haha)...anyway, after last year's team it just hurts seeing our young team's growing pains. They'll be real good....eventually.

Cole Aldrich is more of a leader than Sherron Collins is. So far the Morris twins remind me of Jeff Graves. I'm still in Jose Guillen mode about these guys: "They're a bunch of ******* babies who don't know how to play the ******* game."
