KU bowls over ‘Cats

Defense, run game lift Kansas to sixth win

Anthony Webb and Aqib Talib walked to the locker room together after Kansas University's 39-20 victory Saturday, slithering through thousands of Jayhawk football fans who stormed the field to celebrate a rout of Kansas State.

Webb's eye black had two words scribbled on it that said plenty: "Show stopper."

KU's two cornerbacks - and the defense they play for - had plenty to do with Kansas becoming bowl-eligible Saturday for the second straight season. The Jayhawks forced six turnovers against KSU, two on Webb interceptions and another on a Talib pick.

It was a performance that did plenty to dismantle a massive hype machine under way for Josh Freeman. K-State's quarterback was celebrated nationally after he led the Wildcats to victory over No. 4 Texas last week. Many pundits pointed to him as the reason K-State had the edge heading into Saturday's game.

But the Jayhawks - much like Webb's mantra - were show stoppers. And they did so in spectacular fashion.

"I was rooting for them," Talib said of K-State. "I wanted them to beat Texas so that would make us look even better - after they beat Texas and come and get served by us."

Yes, some Kansas players were in giddy, somewhat cocky moods after Saturday's game, which marked the third straight victory for KU after a midseason funk seemed to doom the 2006 season.

Kansas (6-5 overall, 3-4 Big 12 Conference) now is bowl-eligible, and there's plenty of credit to be passed around. Running back Jon Cornish, who bluntly admitted "I've never liked K-State," was his usual solid self Saturday, picking up a career-best 201 yards on 25 carries - including impressive touchdown runs of 13 and 12 yards.

Audio clips

2006 KU-KSU football

But if the story of the day possibly could be something other than a 200-yard rusher, KU's defense tried to tell it Saturday. The defense scored two touchdowns itself and set up ridiculously short drives that led to the Jayhawks' other two touchdowns, both Cornish runs.

Freeman, K-State's heralded freshman, had three interceptions and lost three fumbles. Even more damaging, three of those turnovers were returned a combined 99 yards for a scores or to set up a scores.

The two biggest came during KU's 19-point fourth-quarter surge. With 10:38 left, Webb picked off an attempted screen pass and bolted 42 yards for a touchdown, finishing the play with a showboating dive into the end zone despite no Wildcat within 20 yards of him.

The second, with 4:35 left, came when Freeman coughed the ball up as he was being hit by KU freshman Jeff Wheeler. The ball went right into Wayne Wilder's hands, and the 300-pound defensive tackle rumbled 34 yards down to the KSU 12-yard line. Cornish ran in on the next play to finish the game's scoring.

"There was just something about the game plan that (assistant coach) Bill Young and the defensive staff put together," KU coach Mark Mangino said. "Everything clicked. When you looked at them on tape and you looked at what we were doing, I thought we really had a chance to play well."

Add to it Cornish's tremendous game, and Kansas had the recipe for a big late-season victory. Heck, Kansas could have put up many more points had it not been for a turnover bug of its own.

Freshman quarterback Kerry Meier threw two interceptions and lost a fumble - all in the red zone - and Cornish coughed up the ball once, too.

But K-State's inability to stop its own bleeding helped Kansas run away with Saturday's game. Afterward, fans stormed the field, destroying helpless goal posts and carrying them up Campanile Hill toward Potter Lake.

A rivalry victory is one thing. Bowl eligibility is another. But that's not what Mangino took out of the 19-point win.

"It helps the big picture of our program," Mangino said. "That KU is now a team that you've got to reckon with in the North, in the conference, in the state of Kansas. That's the important thing."

Kansas will go for victory No. 7 - and a crack at second place in the Big 12 North - with a matchup Saturday at Missouri.

Cornish mentioned several times his disdain for Kansas State after Saturday's game. But now that the show to the West was stopped, the attention turns East to that other big game.

"I look forward to every game," Cornish said. "But next week? I'm looking forward to that one now."

I think it would make more of a statement and be a much classier win if the students expected KU to win and left the goal posts in place. Rushing the field and tearing down the goal posts gives K-State the satisfaction of knowing that we didn't expect to beat them!

wildcat86 13 years, 2 months ago

ksu is by far the more classier team; they didn't tear the down the goal posts when they beat texas, so i would have to agree with livedinlawrence4life on that one. if ku is the best team in the state, why does their record still suck? they'll get creamed next year just like it happened last year. this is the game that is going to flip flop back and forth because both teams can't win at each other's field. oh, and by the way, ku is going to lose to missouri next week.

jhyphene 13 years, 2 months ago

In most circumstances, I agree with the Lawrence native, LivedinLawrence4Life. However, each circumstance is different. Yesterday's victory made KU football history reaching bowl eligibiilty for 2 years in a row. That's worth the celebration, so I'm okay with it. Moving forward, I think the only wins that would justify goal posts in Potter's are clinching the North championship and/or beating top 5 opponents (i.e. Texas, OU, Nebraska).

jhyphene 13 years, 2 months ago

Wait a second, wildct86. Granted I was not at the game to see it, but were the KU players tearing down the goal posts? That surprises me...I made my previous comment because I thought the fans tore down the goal posts.

KU's record sucks because they choked in the closing minutes of 4 games they lost. In reality, there record should probably be 9-2, the losses to Louisiana-Monroe (who KU beat) and Oklahoma State. Don't be so bitter because KSU's brief state-wide dominance of football is over. Besides, KSU has a basketball team to be proud of...LOL.

Nutflush21 13 years, 2 months ago

Wow Wildct86 is not bitter... The only reason K-state didnt tear down the goal posts last week is because their fans couldnt get them down. Students sat on the goal posts for about half an hour and they didnt move. KU beat K-state's behinds yesterday plain and simple. If it wasnt for 3 redzone turnovers we would have flat-out embarrassed the pussy cats.

However, in the end it is painfully obvious that these are two mediocre teams at best. 10 turnovers in a football game is pathetic.

Nutflush21 13 years, 2 months ago

Oh by the way Wildct86, in case you havent noticed Mizzou has had a unbelievable meltdown the last 5 weeks. I mean seriously they lost to Iowa St. KU has owned Mizzou the last 3 years and has a great chance to win next weekend which would vault them into 2nd in the north. At least they wont be getting blown out much like K-state was able to accomplish in Columbia not so long ago.

Jeremy Bolinger 13 years, 2 months ago

yea wildcat86, how can you talk this crap? they did not get creamed last season, if I remember it was 12-3. Talk about a defensive battle. I think the KSU fans rushed the field after last saturdays LUCKY victory over texas. How can you talk about class? You hired Bob Huggins at your university, class just went out the window. Anyways, you lost, have some dignity, and save yourself the embarrassment of talking on here because you have nothing to say. Ku beat the crap out of K-state, so deal with it. And we will do what K-state failed to do earlier this year, and thats beat Missouri.

Jason Leib 13 years, 2 months ago

Um, K-State fans tried to tear down their goalposts after the Texas game, but were unsuccessful.

(According to the Manhattan Mercury, anyway).

And I'm not sure 12-3 (last year's score) is getting "creamed" as you say.

And, no, the players weren't involved in the posts coming down.

nikesasquatch 13 years, 2 months ago

KU FANS TEARING DOWN THE GOALPOSTS TARNISHED THE WIN. KSU IS NOT THAT GOOD OF A TEAM THIS YEAR AND IT WAS EMBARASSING TO SEE KU FANS TEARING DOWN THE GOALPOSTS. IT IS LIKE KU FANS WERE SAYING WE JUST BEAT THE TEAM WHO BEAT THE #4 TEAM IN THE NATION. KU SHOULD SHOW MORE CLASS AND ACT LIKE THEY WERE THE FAVORITES IN THE GAME. I HOPE KU FANS DON'T TEAR DOWN THE RIMS IF THEY GET OUT OF THE FIRST ROUND FO THE NCAA TOURNAMENT!

nikesasquatch 13 years, 2 months ago

WHAT TEARING DOWN THE GOALPOSTS TELLS ME IS KU FANS DOUBTED THEY COULD BEAT KSU WHICH IS JUST SAD. IT TELLS ME KU FANS HAVE TAKEN SO MANY BEATINGS OVER THE YEARS BY BILL SNYDER THAT IT WAS A SHOCK KSU DIDN'T BEAT KU AGAIN. I THINK KU FANS STILL FEAR AND RESENT KSU FOOTBALL EVEN THOUGH THEY WON'T ADMIT IT.

seattlehawk_78 13 years, 2 months ago

I'm 51 and I have a job, a mortgage and a kid. Given my demographics I should be of the opinion that tearing down goalposts is immature and lacking in class and sportsmanship. My only question to those who think the goalposts should stay in place is, what the f@#$ is wrong with kids today? You're not students for long so take this opportunity to get drunk and act stupid. I think it's a great tradition and I hope to see it more often.

nikesasquatch 13 years, 2 months ago

IT IS ONLY A TRADITION TO TEAR DOWN THE GOALPOSTS WHEN YOU UPSET THE OTHER TEAM. KU TEARING DOWN THE GOALPOSTS AFTER BEATING KSU IS LIKE OHIO STATE TEARING DOWN THE GOALPOSTS AFTER BEATING MICHIGAN. OHIO STATE FANS DIDN'T TEAR DOWN THEIR GOALPOSTS. KU BEAT KSU TWO YEARS AGO IN LAWRENCE AND TORE DOWN THE GOALPOSTS. YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHEN TO TEAR DOWN THE GOALPOSTS OR YOU JUST LOOK LIKE YOU ARE UNEDUCATED AND DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. KU SHOULD ACT LIKE THEY HAVE BEEN HERE AND DONE THAT BEFORE. Rutgers fans have a better idea of what they are doing on the field.

Nutflush21 13 years, 2 months ago

Hey Nike, I agree that KU fans shouldnt tear down the goalposts after beating such a horrible team but youre logic is severely flawed. "KU have have taken some many beatings..." Give me a break. Look at the all-time series record. K-state football is a sham. Yeah Snyder got some pretty good non-qualifers out of Juco's and they lucked into ONE conference title but THAT IS IT. Through the years, K-state footbal has been a freaking joke. Their program has never been or ever will be on the same level as the likes of Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Florida, USC etc, etc, etc.

nikesasquatch 13 years, 2 months ago

I SAID BILLY SNYDER OWNED KU IN FOOTBALL. THAT IS ALL THAT I SAID BY THAT!

nikesasquatch 13 years, 2 months ago

KU HAS THIS CHAUVINISTIC ATTITUDE THAT THEY ARE A BETTER UNIVERSITY THAN KSU AND YET KU FANS ARE OUT TEARING DOWN THE GOALPOSTS LIKE THEY WERE SIX TOUCHDOWN UNDERDOGS TO KSU AND HAD NOT BEATEN KSU IN 50 YEARS. IT WAS REALLY PRETTY CLASSLESS AND TARNISHED KU'S WIN. I WONDER WHAT BOWL OUT THERE WANTS A SCHOOL WHO IS GOING TO TEAR DOWN THEIR GOALPOSTS AFTER A WIN THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO GET.

kellermi25 13 years, 2 months ago

first of all they tryed to tear down the goal post but those hicks over there in kitty land couldn't muster it. they are just too stupid i guess.

Nutflush21 13 years, 2 months ago

Why are you so surprised that a bunch of drunk college kids tore down the goalposts? Yeah they shouldnt have done it. We know!! So get over it. It didnt tarnish the beatdown KU put on K-state by any means.

Furthermore KU has this chauvinistic attitude that they are a better university than KSU simply because THEY ARE. This isnt even open for discussion. KU is superior in nearly every way imaginable. From its academic programs to its beautiful campus right through to the athletic department, KU is just better. Its no fault to KSU, afterall they are an ag school in a town often mistaken for a landfill.

nikesasquatch 13 years, 2 months ago

AFTER TEARING DOWN THE GOALPOSTS IT BECAME OBVIOUS KU FANS FELT KSU STILL HAS THE BETTER FOOTBALL PROGRAM. IT IS AMAZING HOW MUCH BILL SNYDER HAS MADE KU FEEL INFERIOR. KU FANS STILL AREN'T OVER IT.

coloskihawk 13 years, 2 months ago

Are you on crack SASTWAT I was on the sideline the year K-state beat us 10-9 and they stormed our field and tore down our goalposts I dont believe KU fans have ever done anything so shameful. Tearing down your own posts is fine!!!

Andrew Kong 13 years, 2 months ago

seattlehawk, you're my boy. did anybody else find it hilarious that Aqib Talib stated that K-State would come "get served by us."? Since K-State served us last year, and we in turn served them back, does this mean that it is indeed "on"? IS IT ON?

kc_wildfire 13 years, 2 months ago

I think there should be a small clarification pointed out...more than likely the goalposts were tore down by students and not regular everyday fans.

I think most everyday fans realize a win over K-State or MU isn't much of an accomplisment. Most students do as well but I would venture to say that most of them were just living in the moment, having fun and doing something that I would suspect a large majority of people have never done...tear down the goalposts.

The more important issue is the University having enough security in place to keep people from rushing the field, especially in games that don't merit the posts being torn down. I remember a year or so ago hearing how much it costs to replace the goalposts...just another factor in rising tuition costs.

CougIsLJW 13 years, 2 months ago

Well, either the university should invest in extra security(see the OSU-Michigan game), or they can embrace this new "tradition".

I can see the TV ads now: "Come to KU, where everyone gets a chance to tear down the goalposts at least once a year!"

84Hawk 13 years, 2 months ago

You K-State fans need to get over the goalpost thing. Who cares? In the end KU kicked K-States butt. End of story. And "nikesasquatch", your typing in all caps makes you look like a desperate fan stomping up and down and crying. According to what you have written, you must be. KU is dominant in every way and you hate that. Get over it. We are not a farm school like KSU. We are academically superior and absolutely superior in sports. Good luck with Huggins this year. I'm sure you KSU fans will be proud of his underhanded ways. In the end we are classy, and you aren't. Rock Chalk baby!!!!

nikesasquatch 13 years, 2 months ago

KU LOOKS BAD ON A NATIONAL LEVEL. KU LOOKS LIKE A BACKWARDS UNIVERSITY WHEN THEY ARE TEARING DOWN THEIR OWN GOALPOSTS IN A WIN OVER A TEAM THEY WERE FAVORED TO BEAT. EVEN SAN FRANCISCO WOULD THINK LAWRENCE IS BACKWARDS ON THIS ONE!

ALSO, KANSAS IS AN AGRICULTURE STATE SO IF KU DOESN'T FIT IN WITH THE STATE THAT IS YOUR PROBLEM!

FlaHawk 13 years, 2 months ago

KU student body shoul dahve picked up Freeman and tossed him in the lake. He did more for the KU victory than anyone else!

nikesasquatch 13 years, 2 months ago

YOU ARE RIGHT! FREEMAN WAS THE BEST QUARTERBACK ON THE FIELD FOR KU. IF MANGINO DOESN'T BENCH MEIER AND BRING IN TODD REESING THEN MIZZOU IS GOING TO SLAM THE 'HAWKS!

I'M ALSO GLAD THEY GOT RID OF CHESTER GILES. IT SEEMS MOST KU FANS LIKED HIM AND PROBABLY STILL DO. KU WOULD NEVER HAVE WON THE NATIONAL TITLE WITH THAT CANCER ON THE TEAM. OF COURSE IT WOULD BE A STRETCH TO THINK KU COULD WIN THE NATIONAL TITLE ANYWAY. THEY NEVER DO.

wildcat86 13 years, 2 months ago

Whoa, I have nothing to say on here? I have just as much say as all of you. And for all of you who say that KSU is just a "farm school" I would advise you to rethink that. Many students who come out of KSU are not in agriculture fields. Oh, and if you think about it, if there wasn't a great Ag school in Kansas, do you think that Kansas would be the second largest beef producing state in the country? And as far as sports go, KSU has a good athletic program and just because the papers critize Huggins doesn't mean he won't turn KSU's basketball program around. First year coaches have it rough, so give them a break. Mangino wasn't too long ago a first year coach himself, and if I remember right, he was a coach at KSU so that's why your little "jayhawks" are doing "good".

amyleigh1221 13 years, 2 months ago

all i have to say is...hahahaha

KSU FANS ARE YOU KIDDING ME? PLEASE...get a freakin life! seriousaly. you are pissed you lost. and to comment on nikesasquatch...you said we were favored to win. your right...by 3 points. first of all, we beat your ass by 19. thats right...19...not 3. and the ONLY reason we were favored by 3 is because we were the home team...so basically it was an even match.

if your FLUKE of a quarterback wouldnt have f*cked up so many times, you could have won. but no...hes a freshman who is overrated and freezes up when it matters. you couldnt do ANYTHING with out turnovers. we scored 30 points on your turn overs. so take the loss and get over it. KU fans dont go writing on your message boards trying to trash talk you because we have better things to do.

grow up and get a life...find something better to do. thanks. also....if you wanna write on here with comments, please do so with something other than "KU sucks" "you suck" "i hate KU". i would rather hear an intelligent argument!

Kit Duncan 13 years, 2 months ago

HEY SASQUATCH! Stop yelling please. In other words, turn off your capslock. Thanks.

To the KSU fans, I would suggest you look at the overall record in both football and basketball. It would take a very long string of victories over KU to even the record.

wildcat86 13 years, 2 months ago

I haven't seen any of the phrases "KU sucks" "you suck" or "i hate KU" used on here, amyleigh1221 so i have no clue as to where you got that to use in your comment. And I would have to say that everyone on here needs to grow up and get a life because in the end it all just comes down to being only a GAME...JUST A GAME! Games are played for fun so why don't we all just get over it now...frankly I'm more concerned now for the families who are either dealing with a loss of a loved one or the injured from the accident with the Cat Tracker bus. But I guess all you liberals can't do that can you?

kellermi25 13 years, 2 months ago

I would like to comment on you lil pussy cat fans. All of you know that ku kick the living crap out of you and you just can't handle the truth. We are deffinatly the better school in the state in athletics as well as academics. All kstate is is a hick school that has people that are stuck in high school. I am speaking from experience from my friends. GOOO HAWKS CAN'T WAIT TILL BBALL!!!!!

thebashman 13 years, 2 months ago

WHY ARE YOU KANSAS STATE MORONS STILL ON OUR SITE?!?!!?!? bottom line....KANSAS 39 - KANSAS STATE 20......WE BEAT YOU.....no matter how classless you think we are, no matter how much of a basketball school you think we are.....no matter how fat our coach is....WE BEAT THE SNOT OUT OF YOU .....ITS OUR FIELD, OUR VICTORY, OUR 39-20 MURDER OF YOUR PATHETIC PROGRAM.....we can do whatever we please.....call it classless, but slowly we are taking over as the best team in the state every year, whether you like it or not .....LOOK AT A REAL RIVALRY, KANSAS VS. thebashman 13 years, 2 months ago

JUST FOR NIKESASQUACH I WANT TO SAY IT AGAIN IN CAPS.....63-36-5 IN FOOTBALL AND 17 STRAIGHT WINS IN "ALLEN FIELDHOUSE WEST"....HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE OWNED SO BAD???.....CALL US CLASSLESS ALL YOU WANT.....WE WILL JUST CALL YOU OUR WHIPPING BOYS, LIKE ONE JOSH FREEMAN.......I THINK HE JUST TURNED IT OVER AGAIN BWHAHAHAHA

shelleysue 13 years, 2 months ago

The goal posts came down because we're bowl eligible for the second time in as many years. That was the cause for celebration - not the fact that we beat K-State. We all knew that Freeman and the Wildcats got lucky in beating Texas and that the Hawks would take care of business. To the fans chanting "Orville Roberts" - it's ORAL Roberts. To the K-State fan behind me that yanked the pom-pom and towel out of my hand not once, but twice: You're an idiot. TOTAL IDIOT. People like you made that spanking so much more fun. Thanks! I was going to talk to you after the game, but I guess you couldn't support your team to the end. That's a shocker. Idiot.

rockchalk66 12 years, 8 months ago

Yup I'm still talking about it Kstate sucks
