NCAA responds to KU’s self-report

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has responded to Kansas University's July 2005 self-report, and has issued a Notice of Allegations regarding violations of NCAA rules from 1997-98 to 2002-03.

KU's self-report, which was prepared by an independent, outside agency, identified NCAA violations discovered by Kansas, and also listed penalties Kansas Chancellor Robert Hemenway imposed upon the athletics department after discussions with Athletics Director Lew Perkins. The self-report also outlined corrective measures the athletics department had instituted since the summer of 2003 to help ensure compliance with NCAA rules.

The NCAA said Kansas demonstrated a failure to exert appropriate institutional control, which was shown by a failure to create and maintain and atmosphere of compliance, a failure to report rules violations in a timely manner, a failure to provide rules education, and a failure to monitor activities of student athletes who lived on campus.

Kansas will respond to the notice and meet with the NCAA on August 13. Subsequent to that meeting, the infractions committee will determine whether or not to impose penalties in addition to those KU imposed upon itself last summer.

"Since we have worked closely with the NCAA throughout this process," Perkins said, "nothing in these pages surprises us. Rather, it serves to reinforce our commitment to doing things the right way.

"We are committed to winning within the spirit and the letter of NCAA rules. We will play by the rules."

"demonstrated a failure to exert appropriate institutional control"

That ALWAYS means more penalties.

Fat man? If your refering to the "fat man" i think you are, then you need to stop and reevaluate where KU's football team has come from. I love how everyone that is critical of him bring up his weight. Nobody discusses his coaching ability/strategies. Plus, what makes you think its just football. From what I remember, the baseball team has been shaddy in the past. Also, the bball team isnt as clean as everyone wants to think.

And the Jayhawk nation loses its mind, blames everybody else and claims Bob Huggins is Cheating in 3,2,1...

We have had 1 winning season in the worst year the Big 12 and the Big 12 North has ever had. Mangino is a slight improvement over Terry Allen, but he has not met expectations as KU's football coach. People think we have had a good football team the last 2 years. Couldn't be farther from the truth.

Or we could all chill the heck out and not be surprised and relax. We have roundabouts to deal with people...the real culprit...

I can see we have some real loyal fans in lawrence. Man, it takes time to build a team to "great." I think Manginos recruiting and overall coaching has been a heck of a lot better than Terry Allen. I mean I used to not even follow KU football and now I love it and get as excited about it as basketball. He has em playing competitively and out there to win. Sure the Big 12 was down last year but we took out Mizzou(3 straight) and Nebraska(1st time in 40 something years) and won the Fort Worth Bowl. So, give this football team some credit time before you start bashing Mangino. He is doing a great job with what he has. I guess you all think Bill Self sucks too since we have lost the last 2 years in the first round...and to all you true loyal fans...ROCK CHALK JAYHAWK!

it's good to see a true jhawk fan like jayhwk5288 tell it like it is. To all you second guessers and bandwagon jumpers ,who made you the experts you think you are. You need to look in a mirror and ask yourself if you are truly a jhawk fan or just someone who likes to take pleasure in someone else matters. If you are not satisfied with the past basketball season then something is wrong. We won the Big 12 tournment and tied for league championship something no one could have dreamed when the season started. So be happy and look to the furture because it looks awful good....Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

p.s just because someone has a weight problem doesn't make them any less a person.....not all people are over weight because all they do is eat.....there are usually medical problems to go along with it....judge not ye unless you also are willing to be judged

Let's see... At the beginning of the year with four untested freshman, the "Giddons Fiasco" and the returning of a single starter (Christian Moody gave great heart and determination, but started only due to a lack of options in 04-05) I would have said: "NCAA tournament, GREAT, I'll take it!" Coach Self wasn't the Big 12 Coach of the Year because he lost to Bradly. He was the Coach of the Year because he took his three freshmen and two sophmores and gave them the opportunity to play in the Big Dance... something even the most tried and true Jayhawk fan could only pray for after the loss to St. Joseph. Mangino??? That man has started a plague in the Jayhawk nation... A plague that turns shame into pride. Remembering Jayhawk football for the past two decades will cause every true 'hawk fan out there to be stricken by it.

Let's let Mangino do his job a few more years before we evaluate where this team is. he is finally starting to get his own team now. I think it takes a lot longer to build a team in football than something like basketball or any other sport. You have to recruit 50-60 new guys in your first few years of building a program. that's a lot tougher than the 10-12 basketball coaches have to do . . . now its finally time that we get to see him coach his own boys. I think it'll be special. There hasn't been this much excitement surrounding KU football in a long time and its for good reason. Why don't we let someone (who is PROMISING!!!!) stick around for a while and see what he can really do before we give up on him.

I agree with hawkandtigerfan. In football you have 22 starters to worry about. Thats 22 different positions. I imagine it will take awhile to build it up. I also believe he has a vision on where he wants this team to be and I think he is dedicated to achieving it. I have NEVER been more proud of a coach as I was when Mangino made the comments after the loss to Texas in 2004. After those comments were said, I knew that I would stick with Mangino till the end. Im glad more people are getting upset about people poking fun at his weight. My only concern about it is that he is healthy enough to stay at Kansas for a long time.

anyone who is criticizing the job that Mangino is doing knows nothing about football. May I remind you that in the Terry Allen days, we had players talking on their cell phones on the sidelines, not exactly a recipe for success. MM is turning this program around in a big way, in a very tough conference that has produced 3 national championship winners in recent history, including this year! Also, might I remind you, that several of the NCAA infractions in question were committed by the most overrated turncoat, worthless, piece of trash, non-recruiting, choke in the big game, talent-wasting, wanna-be nice country boy on the face of the planet, Benedict Arnold-er, I mean Roy Williams - may he rot in hell!

phog....you are nothing more than a trouble maker...and I'm sure your ass is pretty funing.....you have to be a tiger or cat fan in reality....so get a real life because your team (MU or KSU) sucks

Why hasn't the NCAA, Kansas Athletics Association or the Lawrence Public School District disqualified, removed or admonished the Free State High School coach for swimming and diving who proctored, drove and willingly participated in the KU recruiting violations as a "proctor" for the testing done in her classroom? Her testimony was very revealing and her actions reflect badly on local high school coaching. She already had a terrible reputation and lacked credibility. Get rid of her. She is an embarrassment.
