Lockdown…

By Staff     Dec 4, 2007

A lot of people wonder how we get all the content for our stories, how all the interviews are set up and how often we get to mingle with the KU football players.Usually, the access is OK. Coach Mark Mangino makes himself available five days a week during the regular season, and players chat with us in a supervised, structured setting three times a week. But get outside of a normal game week – like right now – and it’s a whole different story. Unfortunately. The Jayhawks have locked themselves in a media-proof room for quite a while. In one 19-day stretch spanning from Nov. 25 to Dec. 14, we will get a total of seven minutes worth of interview opportunities with KU’s football players. Those seven minutes (my tape recorder timed it) happened on Sunday, when five players were available for a maximum of three awkward podium questions each at KU’s bowl selection press conference. Knowing it was going to be the only player availability for a long time, I had two J-W reporters come with me. We planned on spreading out and getting stories on each of the players we figured we’d be able to talk to for more than one minute each. But the in-and-out hurry-hurry podium setup for the press conference made the attempt worthless.Currently, the schedule dictates that we’re not allowed to talk to players again until Dec. 14. I’m trying to write this as informative instead of whiny. I’m not going to openly complain about it. It’s their decision, I have to make it work and the fans who crave information (many of whom are paying big dollars to go to South Florida) ultimately are going to suffer as a result.I’m guessing KU will be angry that I’m taking this public. The access outside of the regular season has always been a struggle, but it’s never been publicized. I imagine KU liked it that way.I wrestled coming out with this, for the simple reason that I wondered if anyone cared how we go about bringing you information. You just want the information. And hey, I feel ya there: I don’t know how they make beer. But as long as it doesn’t run out, I’ll continue to consume it.But I’ve always wanted this blog to be informative and insightful, so here you go. I just hope we don’t run out of stories as the biggest KU football game in four decades looms. It’s not going to be easy.
