The Kansas men’s golf team fell down the leaderboard on the final day of the Big 12 Men’s Championship as a pair of the Jayhawks’ rival teams put up low scores in final-round play.
KU finished the 10-team tournament in eighth place, falling two spots from its standing after third-round play.
The KU team carded an 11-over par in the final round, which was in line with its other scores from previous days of the tournament. But Kansas State and Baylor, the two teams that were trailing KU in the standings, shot some of the best golf of the day on Wednesday at the Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson.
Kansas State shot 2-over par in the final round to finish the tournament two shots ahead of the Jayhawks to finish in seventh place. Baylor went even lower with a 1-over score in the fourth round. The Bears finished in sixth place, three shots ahead of KU.
Oklahoma ran away with the tournament, finishing at 1-under par for the event. TCU finished second with a score of 17-over par. KU finished with a team score of 43-over par.
On the individual front, KU failed to have a golfer shoot even par or better in the final round. Junior William Duquette finished with a 3-over round on Wednesday but ended the tournament tied for 15th. Other KU finishers were: Cecil Belisle, tied for 24th; Gunnar Broin, tied for 27th, Davis Cooper, 32nd; and Will King 33rd.
The Big 12 Championship was a stacked affair, with seven teams ranked in the top 40 nationally competing in the tournament. Kansas finished the regular season ranked No. 55 in the GolfStat national rankings.
KU now must wait until May 3 to learn whether it will be one of 81 teams selected to compete in the NCAA tournament. The NCAA tournament will begin May 15 with the 81 teams competing at six regional tournaments across the country.
