The Kansas football program’s recruiting momentum continued to soar on Sunday, when the Jayhawks landed a commitment from Class of 2024 cornerback Aundre Gibson.

Gibson is labeled a four-star prospect by 247 Sports — 3-star by Rivals.com — and is the highest-rated recruit of the Lance Leipold era to date, according to 247.

He ranks 242nd nationally and is the 19th best cornerback in his class, while also ranking as the sixth best junior in the state of Arizona.

Gibson chose KU over a final four that included Oregon, Oregon State and Washington.

A 5-foot-11, 175-pound cornerback from Desert Edge High in Goodyear, Arizona, Gibson recently told recruiting analysts who cover the Jayhawks that his connection with KU assistant coach Jordan Peterson played a huge role in his decision.

“He’s my guy,” Gibson told Jon Kirby of Rivals site JayhawkSlant.com. “He’s my favorite coach of all the coaches who recruited me from any school and that played a big part in me picking Kansas. I know he’s going to get the best out of me.”

Gibson visited KU with his mother last week and was able to meet the other coaches and support staff and watch a spring practice practice. He liked what he heard and saw so much that he gave a commitment to Leipold before leaving town.

Asked if the planned renovations of the stadium and weight room and locker room played much of a role in his decision, Gibson said the coaches talked about the plans but that they didn’t weigh to heavily into his thinking.

“I come from nothing,” he told Kirby. “I’m not worried about facilities. (As) long as we got a field and weights.”

Gibson is the third player in the Class of 2024 to commit to Kansas, joining Beggs, Oklahoma running back Red Martel and Southfield, Michigan quarterback Isaiah Marshall.

It’s still early but that trio has Kansas ranked 34th nationally in the 2024 team rankings, with 247 Sports ranking Kansas’ 2024 recruiting class 29th at the moment.

There’s a long way to go and more players to add before the class is finalized. The earliest that Gibson and his future teammates can officially sign with KU is during the December signing period.
