Each week during the University of Kansas’ sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of Aug. 25-31, the selections are Emmanuel Henderson Jr. and Tori Wingrove.
Emmanuel Henderson Jr., football
The senior wide receiver, a transfer from Alabama, announced himself to Kansas fans with a dominant showing against FCS foe Wagner on Friday. The high-speed deep threat caught six passes for 130 yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a 62-yard bomb from quarterback Jalon Daniels on the second play of the second half. Prior to the start of the season, he had just five catches in his career, and Friday’s scores were his first two collegiate touchdowns.
Tori Wingrove, cross-country
Wingrove won her first race at the Bob Timmons Classic at Rim Rock Farm on Saturday. Her time of 17 minutes, 56 seconds cleared that of junior teammate Emmaculate Jemutai by 13.6 seconds. In claiming first place, Wingrove improved on her fourth-place showing from last year’s edition of the same event. Kaitlyn Swartz came in third behind Wingrove and Jemutai as the Jayhawks took gold as a team on the women’s side.
