Super-senior midfielder Rylan Childers led the Kansas soccer team with a career-high-tying four points, with a goal and two assists, helping the Jayhawks pick up a 3-0 victory over Kansas City on Thursday night at Rock Chalk Park.
Childers’ assists came on goals by her sister, Raena Childers, and KU leading scorer, Shira Elinav, who now has four goals on the season.
When asked about assisting on her sister’s goal, Rylan Childers said, “As long as we are scoring and we’re winning games, I’m grateful. It’s fun that it is Raena that got to score one, but I think it was a good team win as a whole.”
The 24 shots were the most by a Kansas team since Oct. 24, 2019, against West Virginia (26 shots). Thursday’s win was the fourth shutout of the season for the KU defense, and the Jayhawks now have won three consecutive home games to improve to 5-2 on the season.
“We played well,” KU coach Mark Francis said after the match. “We had 24 shots to two shots so obviously we created opportunities. In the second half, the kids responded and did exactly what we talked about and scored three good goals, and to be fair created some really good opportunities.”
Kansas (5-2) will host Yale at 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Rock Chalk Park. It will mark the first ever meeting between the schools’ women’s soccer programs and the match will be broadcast on ESPN+.
