Former University of Kansas forward Silvio De Sousa confirmed to the Journal-World on Tuesday afternoon that he is headed to Tennessee to continue his college basketball career at Chattanooga.

Stadium’s Jeff Goodman was the first to report the news.

De Sousa, whose Kansas career was known as much for what he did off of the stat sheet as on it, announced last fall that he was leaving the KU basketball program for personal reasons.

Shortly thereafter, news surfaced of his involvement in an altercation outside of a Lawrence nightclub and he is slated to stand trial for aggravated battery beginning Aug. 2.

According to the Journal-World’s reporting, the trial is expected to last about three days.

De Sousa also was a central figure in KU’s NCAA infractions case, as it was alleged that his guardian took money from an Adidas rep during De Sousa’s recruitment.

That cost him the 2018-19 season and initially led to a two-year suspension by the NCAA. However, in May of 2019, De Sousa won his appeal of the NCAA’s decision, which reduced the suspension to just one year, freeing the path for him to play at Kansas during the 2019-20 season.

De Sousa appeared in 18 games during the 2019-20 campaign, but also saw that season cut short because of his role in a nationally televised brawl between KU and Kansas State at the end of a KU victory at Allen Fieldhouse.

De Sousa was immediately suspended indefinitely by Kansas coach Bill Self, and the Big 12 later officially suspended him for 12 games, which took him through the end of the regular season. De Sousa never played again for the Jayhawks.

The sophomore forward from Angola, who, as a freshman, was a key part of KU reaching the 2018 Final Four, took full responsibility for his actions and vowed to make up for it in the future.

But he never got the chance at Kansas. After working out with the team throughout the offseason and the summer of the pandemic, De Sousa announced in October 2020 that he was leaving the program.

The 6-foot-9 forward is expected to be immediately eligible at Chattanooga and will have one year of eligibility remaining.

Chattanooga, which finished 18-8 last season under head coach Lamont Paris, plays in the Southern Conference.
