KU women’s basketball rolls past UMass Lowell to stay undefeated

The Kansas women’s basketball team eased past UMass Lowell for a 79-44 win Sunday afternoon in Allen Fieldhouse.

Senior Mariane De Carvalho matched her career-high of 15 points and secured her first double-double at Kansas with 10 rebounds. Junior Tina Stephens (14) and sophomore Aniya Thomas (15) also added double-digit outings to contribute to the team’s total of 79 points.

The Jayhawks never fell below a 15-point lead through the entirety of the second half and added another victory to their now 4-0 record on regular-season play. Early foul trouble limited both junior Bailey Helgren and Stephens, but De Carvalho maintained intensity through all of her 33 minutes as she led the team in rebounds, steals and finished in a tie for the lead in points.

“Having Tina and Bailey both in foul trouble, it’s nice to know that if we have to, we can count on [Mariane] for that type of production,” KU head coach Brandon Schneider said in a team release.

KU will now have a week off before hosting Texas State at 2 p.m. Sunday.

“Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are really important days because it’s been a while since we’ve had the opportunity to really focus on ourselves,” Schneider said. “We really need to evaluate if there are certain areas that we need to spend our practice time.”
