Bill Self addresses Josh Selby injury, potential No. 1 ranking during Big 12 teleconference

Kansas basketball coach Bill Self, who on Sunday night listed Josh Selby (stress reaction, right foot) as questionable for Monday’s game at Kansas State, addressed Selby’s status on Monday morning’s Big 12 teleconference.

Self said he wouldn’t yet say for sure, but “we’ll play tonight most likely without two of our top six or seven guys (Selby and Thomas Robinson). This is (a situation where) it’s going to have to be somebody just having to do the job. To this point we’ve had a pretty good bench and they’ve responded pretty well (to adversity).”

Of the possibility of becoming No. 1 in the polls Monday, he said: “What I care more about is winning tonight. If you don’t win tonight, it’s a moot point anyway. Whatever happens, I hope it’s a driving motivational force for our team. Whether we are 2 or 1 or whatever, it can be a good motivational factor for you.

“So whatever happens happens. It’s not a huge deal. It would be nice (though). At some point in time since we’ve been there in eight years, I think we’ve been No. 1 either five or six years at some point during the season. The year we won it (2008) we were not No. 1 until the last poll. That’s something you could be proud of.”

If KU is No. 1 this season, the Jayhawks would have been No. 1 in five of Self’s eight seasons, counting the final poll of 2007-08.
