KU baseball rolls, 15-0

For the second day in a row the Kansas University baseball team jumped on an inferior opponent and rolled to an easy victory.

This time it was Tabor College that fell victim to the Jayhawks’ offensive onslaught, 15-0 Wednesday at Hoglund Ballpark.

Behind a grand slam from outfielder Jimmy Waters — his third home run of the season — KU scored seven runs in the second inning and added five in the third to put the game away early.

“We (went) in expecting to put up a lot of runs and get other people playing time so you can’t really take much from it,” Waters said. “It is another game and you go out there to compete and win.”

Twelve Jayhawks recorded hits, including Alex DeLeon, Brian Heere and Jason Brunansky, who each homered.

Freshman hurler Thomas Taylor (1-0) picked up the victory as part of a six-man effort from the KU pitching staff. Taylor gave up four hits in three innings, striking out four and walking one.

The Jayhawks improved to 9-3 and will travel to top-ranked LSU for a weekend series, which begins at 7 p.m. Friday.

“I watched the scores all last week and I was just praying they wouldn’t lose before we got there,” KU coach Ritch Price said. “We want them to be number one when we go down there.”

The defending national champion Tigers (12-0) have averaged 10,000-plus fans per game this season.

“We’re confident we can beat them,” DeLeon said. “We’re going in there to have fun and play the game the way we know we can play.”
