Hulls deliver, but KU softball drops two

By J-W Staff Reports     Feb 20, 2010

? Free State High graduate Rosie Hull went 3-for-3 in her first career start, but it was not enough as the Kansas University softball team fell to Florida, 12-4, on Friday in the Lipton Invitational. Marshall upended KU, 7-3, earlier Friday.

The Jayhawks’ underclassmen were productive against Florida. Freshman Alex Jones joined Rosie Hull with multiple hits, going 2-for-4 from the plate. Maggie Hull, Rosie’s twin and fellow FSHS alum, batted in a team-high two RBIs during the game and was the only other Jayhawk with a hit.

Senior pitcher Sarah Vertelka (0-2) and the KU defense could not stop Florida’s offensive barrage as the Gators scored 12 runs, including four in the bottom of the third frame, to end the game after six innings with a run rule.

The Jayhawks avoided the run rule against undefeated Marshall, but three KU errors allowed the Herd to establish an insurmountable 6-0 lead after 41/2 innings.

Kansas will face Campbell at 3:45 p.m. today and East Carolina at 6 p.m.
