Happy campers: Kansas University’s annual hoops clinic draws a huge crowd

Kansas University basketball coach Bill Self deemed Friday’s annual Holiday Hoops Clinic at Allen Fieldhouse a success.

“It was unbelievable. We had 850 kids here,” Self said. “I bet we had 3,000 people in Allen Fieldhouse, counting the parents and grandparents, which would be a great crowd for 60 percent of Div. I teams out there for a game. I think they all had a good time and will make some noise at the Miami game (5 p.m., Sunday).”

Director of basketball operations Barry Hinson said there were 350 more attendees than a year ago.

“Coach Self made a decision: ‘I don’t care how long it takes. We want to make sure we touch as many kids as we can,’ and still we had to close it down. We could have had 1,500 kids today, but we just couldn’t do it,” Hinson said of accommodating that many. “I’m proud of our players (who took part in four-hour clinic).

“It once again shows you how hands-on coach Self has always been and how important he thinks this is … 850 kids walked out of here today with an autograph from every member and head coach of the 2011 Jayhawk basketball team. That’s a MasterCard commercial. It’s priceless.”
