Obi Muonelo, the No. 1 high school senior basketball player in the state of Oklahoma, on Sunday orally committed to Oklahoma State University.
Muonelo, 6-foot-4, 215 pounds from Santa Fe High in Edmond, Okla., chose OSU over finalists Kansas University, Oklahoma, Illinois and Texas.
He has canceled his Oct. 14 visit to KU for Late Night in the Phog.
“Oklahoma State plays my style of basketball, and everybody knows about them making the Final Four and Elite Eight,” Muonelo told rivals.com.
He’d long been considered a heavy OSU lean.
“Everybody’s making a big deal about Eddie probably not being their coach much longer,” he said of veteran coach Eddie Sutton, “but Sean Sutton (associate head coach who someday will succeed his dad) has actually been calling the shots for about two years now.”
Muonelo averaged 18 points and 10.2 rebounds in leading the Wolves to the Class 6A state title his junior season.
KU, which has filled one of its three available scholarships for next season with former Free State High guard Brady Morningstar, has a pair of top senior targets coming in for Late Night.
Sherron Collins, a 5-11 guard from Chicago Crane High, is down to KU, Iowa and Illinois.
Darrell Arthur, 6-9 from South Oak Cliff High in Dallas, who visited North Carolina last weekend, also is considering SMU, Indiana and Baylor.
Elsewhere, Greg Oden, a 7-foot senior from Indianapolis who has committed to Ohio State, said he might wait until the spring signing period (April 12-May 17) to ink instead of the early period (Nov. 9-16). He may want to learn the severity of NCAA sanctions to be announced against OSU after an NCAA infractions-committee hearing scheduled for Dec. 9-10.
