Handshy declines to sign

Lawrence High senior Ian Handshy wasn’t among the hundreds of Kansas high school football players signing national letters of intent Wednesday.

Handshy instead accepted an offer to join Kansas University as a preferred walk-on.

“I had some really nice offers from other schools, especially Washburn and Baker,” said Handshy, a 6-foot, 210-pound Shrine Bowl selection who played running back and linebacker for the Lions. “But I decided I wanted to be a Jayhawk. I really want to see if my talents will take me far enough to get playing time.”

Handshy, who also was contacted by several junior colleges, likely will take a red shirt his freshman year.

“I think I’ll be on defense, but as a walk-on you really have no idea,” said Handshy, who rushed for 806 yards and eight touchdowns.

Two LHS seniors signed letters of intent Wednesday. Running back/defensive back Jeff Colter (5-9, 160) signed with NCAA Division Two power Northwest Missouri State, and lineman Aaron Kie (6-2, 260) signed with Haskell Indian Nations University.

Colter rushed for a team-high 950 yards and eight touchdowns and was a second-team All-Sunflower League running back, but the all-state cornerback likely will play in the secondary for Northwest Missouri State.

The Bearcats were 11-2 last fall when their season ended with a loss to Pittsburg State in the Division Two playoff semifinals.

“That’s exciting,” Colter said of Northwest Missouri’s success. “They have great competition. It will make me better practicing against them.”

Kie, a first-team all-league offensive lineman, was recruited by several junior colleges, but opted to stay home. His mother, Debora Thompson, is a facilities manager for Haskell.

“It’s an opportunity to play with the best Native American football players in the United States,” Kie said.

At Free State, lineman Casey Ballard (6-1, 240) and linebacker Corey Galloway (6-2, 220) each signed letters of intent with Hutchinson Community College. Galloway caught the Blue Dragons’ attention despite suffering a season-ending knee injury in Free State’s fifth game.

FSHS lineman Jarvis Doleman (6-2, 300) signed with national power Butler County CC.

“His best football is in front of him as he grows, matures and continues to get stronger,” Free State coach Bob Lisher said. “He’s working hard. I think he has a chance to go on and play after Butler.”

A few other Firebirds still are pondering their choices. Shrine Bowl selection Philip Weinmaster (6-2, 240) has been contacted by Washburn, Baker, MidAmerica Nazarene and William Jewell as well as several junior colleges. Tight end/linebacker Danny Pike (6-2, 190) also remains undecided.

Lisher said running back/defensive back Jamie Resseguie (5-10, 185) had offers from junior colleges and NAIA schools but was considering walking on at KU.
