? Kansas University’s soccer team took a small break from its Big 12 Conference schedule to secure a big victory.

Caroline Smith scored two goals, and the Jayhawks upended Michigan, a team which advanced to the Elite Eight in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, 2-1, Sunday at U-M Soccer Field.

KU improved its overall record to 14-4-1 and set a school record for wins in a season.

“Michigan is a good team, and it is definitely a big win for us on the road,” KU coach Mark Francis said. “The game was a tale of two halves. We played poorly in the first half, particularly the first 25 minutes.”

Michigan took a lead in the 10th minute when Katelin Spencer finished a rebound in front of KU keeper Meghan Miller.

“We tried to regroup at halftime,” Francis said. “I thought the girls played much better in the second half, just like we asked them to.”

Kansas pulled even in the 60th minute when Smith found the back of the net for her 17th goal. The Edina, Minn., sophomore then put the Jayhawks in front, using a pass from Holly Gault in the 63rd minute to tally her team-leading sixth game-winning goal.

“I thought we had other chances in the second half but just didn’t finish,” Francis added.

KU will wrap up its regular-season schedule Friday at home against Oklahoma State. Match time is 3 p.m. at SuperTarget Field.
