Jayhawks win Minnesota Invitational

? Kansas University’s swimming and diving team won the Minnesota Invitational with a final score of 748. The Jayhawks finished well ahead of 25th-ranked Minnesota (619) and 10th-ranked Wisconsin (592), who finished second and third respectively.

Kansas had three first-place finishes on the final day. Whitney Sondall won the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:02.06, her fifth victory of the weekend

Amy Gruber finished first in the 100-yard freestyle (50.63). The Bigelow, Ark. junior lead the Jayhawks with six wins during the invitational.

KU finished the weekend with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Gruber, Ashley Dower, Aly Colver and Kim Bolin finished in 3:25.15.

“I was so proud of both the swimming and diving teams’ performances this weekend,” head coach Clark Campbell said. “Our program showed that it is able to compete with the best teams in the country.”

The second day of action saw Kansas win three events, the 200-yard medley relay, the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke. The relay team of Sondall, Hannah Bakke, Gruber and Bolin finished in 1:43.03. Gruber won the butterfly (55.11) and Sondall won the backstroke (55.63).

“Amy Gruber, Whitney Sondall, Kim Bolin and many others did a fantastic job,” Campbell said. “This weekend was a statement by our program that Kansas can compete at the national level.”
