? Sam Houston State basketball player Mario Kinsey has been suspended for the rest of the season because of an incident that occurred in College Station.

Kinsey, a sophomore who transferred to SHSU from Kansas University, and Robert Herron, a sophomore safety on the school’s football team, were arrested in the early morning hours of Feb. 23.

According to a police report, Kinsey was charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon. Herron was charged with possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of marijuana.

Kinsey reported his involvement in the incident to SHSU athletic director Bobby Williams last week and was suspended for the rest of the season.

According to CSPD public information officer Lt. Rodney Sigler, approximately 2 a.m. Feb. 23, police were breaking up a large fight at the McDonald’s Restaurant located at 111 George Bush Dr. After the fight was broken up, police reportedly heard four to five shots fired near the McDonald’s parking lot.

According to the arrest report, police officers approached Kinsey in his vehicle, at which time he admitted he had a gun. After searching the vehicle’s passengers, police found Herron was in possession of brass knuckles and a marijuana joint.

Kinsey, who became eligible at the semester, played in 17 games for the Bearkats, starting three and averaging 5.1 points per game. The Bearkats won the Southland Conference regular-season championship and will play in the league’s postseason tournament Wednesday night.

A native of Waco, Texas, Kinsey was the starting quarterback for the Jayhawks during most of the 2001 season. He also played part of one semester on the KU basketball team.

After the 2001 fall semester, Kinsey was dismissed from KU for violating athletic department policies. He enrolled at SHSU in the spring of 2002.
