Kansas University’s football team wrapped up two-a-day practices Wednesday night with an open practice at Memorial Stadium.

Coach Mark Mangino had a clear message for the crowd of about 700 on Fan Appreciation Day.

“We mean business,” the second-year coach said.

Mangino said the Jayhawks had been working from 6:45 a.m. until 10 p.m. each day since players reported Aug. 4.

That schedule will be scaled back when fall classes start today.

“I’m excited about this season,” linebacker Banks Floodman said. “This is the hardest I’ve seen a

Jayhawk team work.”

The final hour of practice was open to the public. KU spent about half that time working on red-zone situations, and the offense dominated the defense.

Freshman receiver Moderick Johnson scored the first touchdown with an eight-yard pass from second-string quarterback Brian Luke.

Sophomore tailback Clark Green scored on a pair of short TD runs, and quarterback Bill Whittemore also scored from three yards out.

Junior Johnny Beck and freshman Scott Webb split the kicking duties. Webb was 3-for-3 on extra-point attempts, while Beck was 2-for-2.

The kicking team had one miscue when a bad snap botched a field-goal attempt by Beck. Given a second chance, Beck connected from 29 yards.

One highlight for the defense was provided by sophomore safety Rodney Fowler, who broke up a pass intended for red-shirt freshman Charles Gordon in the end zone.

  • My kingdom for a depth chart: Mangino has not released a depth chart or an updated roster since training camp opened.

However, the first-team defense appeared to be junior end David McMillan, junior tackle Chuck Jones, senior tackle Tony Strickland and senior end Reggie Curry on the line with sophomores Floodman, Gabe Toomey and Nick Reid at linebacker. Juniors Tony Stubbs and Shelton Simmons were at safety with sophomore Ronnie Amadi and senior Remuise Johnson on the corners.

Junior-college transfers Monroe Weekley and Phil Tuihalamaka were working with the second-string line with corner Marcus Hicks and Fowler in the secondary. Linebacker Zach Mims also was working with the second string.

The first-team offensive line appeared to be senior tackles Adrian Jones and Danny Lewis, red-shirt freshman guard Bob Whitaker, junior guard Tony Coker and center Joe Vaughn.

Of course, all that could change with more than a week of practices remaining before the Aug. 30 opener against Northwestern.

  • Running back rundown: Green took the majority of the snaps at tailback and was backed up by Wichita freshman John Randle. Red-shirt freshman Jerome Kemp, who is expected to challenge for the starting role, spent most of the night on the sideline. Red-shirt freshman Jon Cornish was working with the third string.
  • Quarterback battle: Junior-college transfer John Nielsen remains third at quarterback behind Whittemore and Luke. Freshman Adam Barmann got in late, but junior Kevin Long stayed on the sideline.
  • Watkins watch: Junior co-captain Travis Watkins watched from the sideline on crutches with his broken left foot in a cast.
  • Long night: Players signed autographs after practice ended at 7:30 p.m., then returned to the football offices for meetings.

“Stick with us,” Whittemore told fans. “We’ll work our butts off.”
