The Jayhawks pressed her and harassed her, zoned her, doubled her, tripled her and quadrupled her, fronted her and face-guarded her, did everything but fold, spindle and mutilate her.

None of it worked.

Lambert, BU’s wicked-fast junior guard, collected a career-best 37 points and 10 assists as the Bears remained undefeated with an 85-80 victory over the struggling Jayhawks on Saturday afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse.

“The story of the game was that Lambert did what she wanted to do against us,” said Kansas senior forward Jaclyn Johnson, who scored a team-high 17 points before fouling out after playing just 17 minutes. “She just drove right up the middle on us. We tried to stop her, and we ended up fouling her. We put our best defensive player on her, Selena (Scott), and she ran circles around her.”

Lambert, a 5-foot-7 junior transfer from Grayson County (Texas) College, where she was a two-time NJCAA All-American, hit 13 of 24 field goals, one of two three-pointers and 10 of 16 free throws. She scored 16-straight points in the second half.

“She’s quick,” Scott said of Lambert, the Big 12’s scoring leader. “At first, we were going straight-up, but as the game went on we tried to face-guard her, and we couldn’t do it.”

Kansas, which fell to 6-6 overall, 0-1 in the Big 12 after losing its third straight and fifth of its last six, was out of it early. The Bears (12-0, 2-0), off to the best start in school history, bolted to a 41-30 halftime lead before the Jayhawks rallied.

After looking up at a double-digit deficit most of the second half, Kansas pulled within four points, at 77-73, with 4:06 remaining.

Baylor ran off four straight points for an 81-73 lead with just over two minutes left, but a pair of buckets by Kansas’ Brooke Reves made it 81-77 with 1:12 left.

Kansas hit just one of its final three shots a Scott three just before the final buzzer and Lambert hit two free throws and a fastbreak bucket to seal the outcome.

“It was a tough game to lose,” KU coach Marian Washington said. “We’re just going to have to keep the faith and keep working hard.”

One glaring statistical disparity came at the free throw line. Baylor hit 24 of 35 free throws, while Kansas was 15-for-21.

“We fought to put ourselves in position where we might get to the line more,” Washington said tactfully. “But it didn’t happen.”

Kansas was called for 25 fouls to Baylor’s 21, and KU had two foul-outs Johnson and Dalchon Brown. Baylor’s Brooke McCormack also fouled out.

“They made more free throws than we attempted,” said Scott, who finished with 12 points, seven assists and zero turnovers. “That’s never good.”

“We didn’t play solid defense,” added Reves, who had 16 points. “We got lazy and ended up fouling when we shouldn’t have fouled.”

Baylor’s Danielle Crockrom benefited from the trips to the line. She hit nine of her 10 free throws and finished with 23 points.

“Coming in, we wanted to shut down Lambert and shut down Crockrom,” Reves said. “We didn’t stick to the plan. It was, pick your poison. If we could have shut one of them down, it might have been different, but we didn’t shut either one down.”

KU will travel to Iowa State on Wednesday, then return home for Kansas State next Saturday.
