Kansas University’s softball team could be without All-Big 12 Conference outfielder Shelly Musser the rest of this week.
Musser, who has a back injury, likely won’t play in today’s game at Washburn, and may not be ready for a two-game set with Baylor on Friday and Saturday at Jayhawk Field.
Musser, a junior who has been a fixture in center field throughout her KU career, batted just once in Tuesday’s doubleheader at Wichita State.
“After her first swing you could see she was hurting,” KU coach Tracy Bunge said. “After that first at-bat she pulled herself out.”
Musser first injured her back over the weekend at Texas Tech. She has also been playing all spring on an ankle that will require surgery after the season.
“Shelly’s as tough a kid as you can be. She tweaks the ankle in just about every game,” Bunge said. “She’s dealt with pain all season, and put her body on line for the team.”
Musser is hitting .295 with a team-leading five triples and 15 stolen bases. She was a first team all-conference pick as a freshman and a second team selection last year.
With Musser out, Bunge has shifted right fielder Erin Garvey to center and catcher Leah Tabb to right.
Tabb will be replaced behind the plate by either junior Katie Campbell or freshman Dani May, a Lawrence High product.
Today’s 3 p.m. game at Washburn is a make-up of a game postponed by cold weather on Feb. 28. Kansas, 21-20 overall, will play host to Baylor at 5 p.m. Friday and 1 p.m. Saturday.
