Darrell Wyatt officially announced Friday his resignation from Kansas University’s football coaching staff.
Wyatt, a four-season KU assistant who was promoted to associate head coach/offensive coordinator a month ago, will join new Oklahoma State coach Les Miles’ staff as the Cowboys’ passing-game coordinator.
KU football coach Terry Allen
“First of all, I would like to thank Darrell for his contributions to the University of Kansas the past four years,” KU coach Terry Allen said in a release. “His loyalty and hard work have been significant in all areas of our program. We made every effort to keep Darrell, but he wants to be a head coach and felt it was important to his career growth to face the challenge of working in different systems and with different head coaches.
“I think it’s important that everyone understands that KU stepped up and made a strong commitment to Darrell in an effort to have him remain at Kansas. We met his salary offer at Oklahoma State and also offered him an extended contract. I know it was a difficult decision for him and his family because of their attachment to KU, the community and our players.”
Wyatt’s departure leaves Kansas with three coaching vacancies, including both coordinator jobs. Late last month, Allen dismissed defensive coordinator Ardell Wiegandt and offensive line coach Walt Klinker, and tight ends coach Todd Middleton left on his own.
Allen since has hired Sam Pittman, formerly at Missouri, as KU’s offensive line coach.
Wyatt was regarded as one of KU’s best recruiters. He joined the staff as wide receivers coach in 1997 and was promoted to assistant head coach the following year. He was promoted again last month.
“I would like to thank coach Allen, (athletics director) Bob Frederick and Chancellor (Robert) Hemenway for giving me the opportunity to work and develop as a coach at the University of Kansas,” Wyatt said. “I made the decision to accept the position at Oklahoma State to continue my growth as a football coach.”
