Aaron Clopton, a student manager on the Kansas University softball team for the last three seasons, has been named an assistant coach. Clopton, who graduated last spring, was hired by head coach Tracy Bunge to replace Drew Christmon who left the staff.
Katie Kieffer, a sophomore from Frontenac, Mo., has decided to leave the Kansas University volleyball team. Kieffer, who transferred from Texas Christian University, saw action in 25 matches last season at TCU.
Kansas University will hold its annual varsity-alumni match at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Horejsi Center. Before the featured match, members of past Jayhawk teams will play in a non-competitive scrimmage at 5 p.m.
Former Kansas University basketball forward Darrin Hancock has signed with the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets.
Traiskirchen, Austria Kansas University senior Luke Axtell scored six points on 2-of-10 shooting as the Big 12 Conference All-Stars beat Arcadia Traiskirchen Basketball Club, 93-75, Saturday.
All of the 6-foot-9 Axtell’s shot attempts were from beyond the three-point arc.
Chris Owens of Texas scored a game-high 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting. He also had nine boards and two steals.
Jamaal Tinsley of Iowa State had six assists and five steals, while Texas Tech’s Cliff Owens had 12 boards.
The All-Stars, 2-0, will meet Basket Swans at 7 tonight.
Chuck Hayes, a 6-foot-6, 225-pound football-basketball player from Modesto, Calif., will make a basketball recruiting visit to Kansas on Sept. 22-23, the weekend of the KU-Southern Illinois football game.
Hayes told recruiting analyst Mike Sullivan he’d visit Kentucky on Oct. 7. Hayes also is considering UCLA, USC, Oregon, Oregon State, Saint Louis and some other California schools.
Hayes averaged 26 points a game his junior year in high school. Sullivan compares him to a young, raw Charles Barkley.
Victoria, Texas Kansas University’s men’s golf team is in 11th place after two rounds of the NCAA Central Regional championships at Victoria Country Club.
KU, which has totaled 583 strokes, is three strokes behind ninth-place Baylor. The top nine teams advance to the NCAAs after today’s final round.
KU was tied for 20th after first day’s play 10 strokes behind the ninth-place team.
Sophomore Casey Harbour, KU’s leading finisher after two rounds at 143, had a hole in one on the sixth hole 209 yards. He used a 5-iron. KU’s Conrad Roberts fired a 68 on Friday and is in 34th place at 145. Results in scoreboard.
Baldwin Baker University’s Meghan Lewis finished second at the NAIA women’s golf championships this week in London, Ky. Lewis, a sophomore from Syracuse, fired 79-79-77235 and missed being medalist by two strokes.
Baker’s Sarah Payne, a freshman from Topeka, was 13th by shooting 80-87-85252. Other BU scores were: Amanda Michel 96-99-95 290, Ramona Knocke 96-102-93291 and Miriam Rice 110-112-91313. As a team, Baker tied for eighth place.
Lawrence High, a state qualifier for the 10th time in the program’s 15-year history, is the No. 2 seed for the Class 6A state baseball tournament to played next weekend at Kansas University’s Hoglund Ballpark.
The Lions (19-2) will play No. 7 Wichita Heights (15-7) at 11 a.m. Friday in the first round.
Other first-round contests on Friday are No. 1 Shawnee Mission South (20-2)-No. 8 Olathe North (10-12) at 4 p.m., No. 3 Wichita North (19-3)-No. 6 Junction City (14-8) at 1:30 p.m. and No. 4 Maize (17-5)-No. 5 SM Northwest (16-5) at 6:30 p.m.
The LHS-Wichita Heights winner will play the Wichita North-Junction City winner at 10 a.m. Saturday. The SM South-Olathe North winner will play the Maize-SM Northwest winner at 12:30 p.m. Saturday.
The third-place game is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday. The championship is 5:30 p.m.
Also, LHS athletics director Ron Commons announced on Friday that Lawrence would not resume its doubleheader with SM Northwest. The second game was called at 9-all last week in the eighth inning because of lightning.
Lawrence High, a state qualifier for the first time since 1979, is the No. 8 seed and will play No. 1 Shawnee Mission Northwest in the first round of the Class 6A state softball tournament next week at Holcom Park.
The Lions (14-8) will meet SM Northwest (21-1) at 5 p.m. on Friday. SM Northwest swept a doubleheader from LHS on May 4 with two shutouts.
Other first-round contests on Friday are No. 4 Blue Valley Northwest (18-3)-No. 5 Wichita Northwest (19-3) at 7 p.m.; No. 2 Wichita East (19-3)-No. 7 Junction City (16-6) at 5 p.m. and No. 3 Olathe East (19-3)-No. 6 Maize (17-5) at 7 p.m.
The LHS-SM Northwest winner will play the Blue Valley Northwest-Wichita Northwest winner at 10 a.m. Saturday. The Wichita East-Junction City winner will play the Olathe East-Maize winner at 10 a.m.
The third-place game is set for noon Saturday. The championship is set for 1 p.m.
Three members of Lawrence High’s state-qualifying softball team have been named to the all-Sunflower League squad.
Senior catcher Dani May, senior shortstop Marissa Romero and sophomore pitcher/outfielder Ashley Burnett represented the Lions on the first squad.
LHS senior first baseman/pitcher Sommer Heiserman received honorable mention.
