It was a good weekend for the Kansas baseball and softball teams, which combined to go 7-1, with a couple of notable performances included in those victories.
On Sunday, Dan Fitzgerald’s baseball team beat Oakland 26-3, marking the most runs the program has scored in a single game since 1997.
The game featured a 12-run sixth inning and seven KU home runs. Jake English hit two while Collier Cranford, Cole Elvis, Luke Leto, Janson Reeder and Kodey Shojinaga each hit one.
The seven homers tied a program record set in 1984 and the 12-run sixth was the Jayhawks’ most explosive inning since they scored 16 in an inning back in 2004.
“I don’t think we gave really any at-bats away,” Fitzgerald said after the win. “To be able to do that, score that many runs, and have 46 at-bats and only punch out five times is a testament to the approach. I thought they were super locked in.”
After taking the opening series of the season, 2-1 over Valparaiso, the Jayhawks ripped off three consecutive wins over Oakland before falling, 6-3, on Monday to move to 5-2 on the season. The Jayhawks will travel to Nashville this weekend for a three-game series against Belmont.
On the softball side of things, junior Addison Purvis tossed her first career no-hitter during a five-inning, 10-0 win over Texas Southern on Sunday in Austin, Texas.
The win moved the Jayhawks to 10-5 after going 4-1 over the weekend. KU has won three in a row and six of its last seven games.
Purvis improved to 4-0 on the season. The no-hitter was the first by a Kansas pitcher since Lexy Mills achieved the feat on March 18, 2019 against Omaha and the Jayhawks’ second no-hitter under fifth-year head coach Jennifer McFalls.
Kansas will travel to Tampa, Florida to participate in the Bulls Invitational later this week. The Jayhawks will play host school South Florida along with Army, USC-Upstate, Northern Illinois and Rhode Island Thursday through Saturday at USF Softball Stadium.
