Weis releases Spring Depth Chart for KU football

Here’s a quick look at the pre-spring Kansas University football depth chart released today by new KU coach Charlie Weis.

Weis said the depth charts are very fluid and made it clear that this first edition was made without seeing a single practice. It’s clear by looking at it that past experience and seniority played a role in putting this one together.

With the first of 15 spring practices getting under way today, effort and ability will begin to factor in.

Berglund? Berglund? Berglund? (in Ben Stein voice)

What's the deal with Heaps? Does he not have to sit a year?

kcgregory 10 years, 3 months ago

He does have to sit. Weis indicated he'd get reps in the Spring and lesser reps as the summer progressed.

What about McCay though? Was he granted a waiver?

Matt Tait 10 years, 3 months ago

You're right on Heaps. Weis is just planning to use him while he can. Plus, the likely back-up, Turner Baty, won't be here until this summer, so it's not hurting anything...

As for McCay, no word yet, but Weis said we could hear something as soon as this week. The NCAA has all the info, now they must review it and make a ruling. Just a hunch here, but it's sounding good and I know a lot of people expect the ruling to be in KU's favor.

If some of those juco newcomers on the D Line don't rise on the depth chart, it would be very disappointing.... but guessing they will...

Doug Cramer 10 years, 3 months ago

Have major doubts that our d-line will be improved. Based off of who we picked up...Campo has his work cut out for him.

The thing that concerns me...we didn't recruit any decent freshman talent for the future.

I realize that Weis is an offense guy...but fixing the d-line has GOT to be a priority if this program is going to make progress. It didn't get fixed with this recruiting class.

Bangkok_Jayhawk 10 years, 3 months ago

Disagree... He had no time to recruit the high school kids. He got a nice pick up in Holmes but most of the efforts went into the JUCO guys and transfers. I would say the additions of McKinney, Stowers, Williams, and Tavai were enough to show that it was a priority.

At the very least, having guys like Young, Keba, Toben and John Williams in the program for another year will be a slight improvement.

Doug Cramer 10 years, 3 months ago

Bangkok - I understand where you're coming from...with the fact that Weis didn't have time to pick up quality high school kids. I don't disagree with you there.

All I'm saying is that the d-line didn't get fixed with the guys we have on this roster.

Weis needs to put a priority on getting some big nasties in here with these next couple of recruiting classes.

Again...all I'm saying is don't get your hopes up that our defense will be improved...because it starts with the line...and it's got a Loooooong ways to go.

David Meredith 10 years, 3 months ago

Matt, this is not a complaint, but I think we need an updated roster on this site... especially one that doesn't still list Turner Gill as the head coach!

Jeff Worthington 10 years, 3 months ago

Matt, this IS a complaint. We definitely need an updated roster. Who's this Gill guy?

Eric Williams 10 years, 3 months ago

MLB doesn't update depth charts in December. Same for NFL and NBA in the off-season.

It's more work for the staff to be constantly updating/making changes, especially when all the recruits aren't officially enrolled and on campus yet. Expect a change in the summer when camp opens.

It amazing how a few talented folks have reversed the somewhat glum prospects KU was facing in both football and basketball just a few short months ago. KU was coming off a horrible football season and it looked like we were going have to start all over again. Then Zenger hits a home run with the Weiss hiring, followed by Weiss's huge gets, and all of sudden we're looking at a chance of playing .500 ball, and maybe even going to a minor bowl game.

And it basketball, after the slow start and the Davidson loss, many of us were fearful whether we'd make the tourney. And now we're going to the Final Four.

Quite the turnaround, not to mention the success of the women's basketball team.

I am very very surprised to not see Ben Heeney anywhere on the defensive list, I thought he was a special teams animal last year and was going to break out this year. . . . still time to earn a spot on the depth chart I guess. I think he is going to be a absolute stud linebacker by the time he leaves Kansas.

KGphoto 10 years, 3 months ago

I think, in a way, we have to take this whole list with a grain of salt. It's more than preliminary, and Weis probably has some hidden motives by even producing one to begin with, ie, lighting fires under butts. I don't even know how to read some of it.

Matt, (or anybody) what does the number/letter in parenthesis mean.

F (11) Beshears Marquis Jackson, 6-0, 218, Soph.

F (12) Smiley

I don't see several names on the list including a couple of physical commodities in Prinz Kande and Ben Heeney.

Six WRs before Marquis Jackson. Kevin Young two notches below Lewo at DT, Michael Reynolds at SAM etc., and what happened to Malcom Walker?

I'm not worried about it, in fact I find the list very interesting and I can't wait to see how it evolves. Many, many interesting shifts here from last year.

Matt Tait 10 years, 3 months ago

The number has to do with personnel packages... 12 = one back and two tight ends, 21 = two backs and one tight end, and so on and so on...

Sorry to float that out there without explaining it.

KGphoto 10 years, 3 months ago

Thanks Matt.

Nothing to be sorry about...

...except your Final Four picks.

Jayhawk2016 10 years, 3 months ago

Malcom Walker is no longer on the team along with Isaac Wright.

Matt Tait 10 years, 3 months ago

Weis wiped out a lot of walk-ons who weren't making the grade... Can't remember the exact mark, but it's pretty high. And it should be. He doesn't want walk-ons bringing down the team GPA.

As for my Final Four picks, you're right about that... What an embarrassing showing that was. Yeesh!

Ron Prichard 10 years, 3 months ago

Matt, I just noticed could you pick MU in your Final Four along with UNC? MU and not KU? Shame, shame, shame!

Dirk Medema 10 years, 3 months ago

Could it be that Scott Holsopple (?) had a say in preparin thedepth chart? Now that could be some motivation that lasts through the summer.

april28 10 years, 3 months ago

Interesting concept....would definitely make some sense because I couldn't figure out why Weis would release a depth chart at all. If you are going to release one, why not base it on off-season commitment?

Dyrk Dugan 10 years, 3 months ago

i thought Victor Simmons was gone too. But i'm glad he's back (or never left)....he can flat fly.
