'Louisianimal' RB Anthony 'Pooka' Williams picking up interest from major programs

The University of Kansas football program generated an explosion of unexpected buzz this past February by adding intriguing prospects to its 2018 recruiting class.

But 10 months later, with the NCAA’s new early-signing period for college football beginning Dec. 20, the vibe surrounding KU’s potential signees could shift drastically in the opposite direction.

Over the weekend, the biggest name tied to the Jayhawks, four-star New Orleans receiver Devonta Jason, decommitted from David Beaty’s program. Meanwhile, the only quarterback in KU’s class, Texas prep Clayton Tune, visited Ole Miss and currently describes Kansas as “still in the picture” for the quickly approaching signing day.

KU fans now have to hope Beaty and his staff can hold on to the high school commitments they have, with the biggest concerns being four-star cornerback Corione Harris — Jason’s prep teammate at Landry-Walker (La.) — and the group’s other remaining “Louisianimal,” running back Anthony “Pooka” Williams.

Harris announced recently he will chose between KU and Mississippi State. Williams, though, appears to have a number of programs to consider.

Sam Spiegelman, a recruiting reporter for SEC Country, spoke with Williams after his Hahnville High team lost in Louisiana’s Class 5A state title game on Saturday. The 5-foot-10, three-star running back explained how his recruitment has picked up during his remarkable senior season, capped by rushing for 1,403 yards and 14 touchdowns in five playoff games.

The speedy all-purpose back told SEC Country he not only has an offer from LSU but also Miami. Plus, Williams related, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Alabama and Auburn have shown interest in him, as well.

“A lot of schools have come here,” Williams told SEC Country. “When you do big things, big schools come in. Nebraska, Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Miami. … I can keep naming schools.”

Williams had stated previously he planned to sign with Kansas on Dec. 20, but Spiegelman reported the Louisiana standout is considering delaying signing until February.

If the increasingly popular running back had to make a choice now, he told SEC Country he would pick the Jayhawks, to whom he committed in February after hitting it off with running backs coach Tony Hull, a Louisiana native.

“It’s still Kansas, because I’m committed to them and I gave them my word,” Williams said. “It would be hard for me to flip my word on them. It’s about loyalty and it’s like a family, so if I go somewhere, I have to feel comfortable and it’s where I can play. We’ll see who can build a family [relationship] with me and we’ll take it from there.”

At first glance it looks like he's still strongly committed to KU. The way things have gone lately though, and with the offers he has on the table, I wouldn't blame him if he chose one of the other schools. Is it possible we lose Tune along with ALL the Louisiana recruits? If so hopefully Beaty has a back up plan that doesn't include a bunch of JUCO or Transfer players.

Kevin Robert Fest 4 years, 6 months ago

Who do you think would want to come to this dumpster fire besides JUCOS and Transfers? Most of the latest committs have been JUCOS right. On the board seems like most of the visits are from JUCOS as well.

John Fitzgerald 4 years, 6 months ago

Not saying anyone will or won’t, I’m just saying hopefully he has a plan outside of JUCO players.

Kevin Robert Fest 4 years, 6 months ago

Well whatever it is he better figure something out quick early signing is next week and Feb signing is around the corner if he is still trying to figure out what to do KU is behind everyone else. FURTHER behind than they already are. Currently 10th in the Big 12 and 83rd nationally.

Brett McCabe 4 years, 6 months ago

We will lose both, and we may lose more than that. The program is dead carcass in a field, being picked at by every animal that walks or crawls by.

Girod, Zenger and Beaty should all do KU a major favor and not show up for work tomorrow.

Jeff Coffman 4 years, 6 months ago

I think instead of tomorrow, you meant ever.

Kevin Robert Fest 4 years, 6 months ago

Ooooooh boy. Another one bites the dust. If he waits until Feb he's as good as gone as well. Who could blame him. If KU showed any signs of progress the last couple of years who might have come, but with this mess who could blame them? LSU, MIAMI offering, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Alabama and Auburn have shown interest in him, as well. Buh bye

“A lot of schools have come here,” Williams told SEC Country. “When you do big things, big schools come in. Nebraska, Auburn, LSU, Alabama, Miami. … I can keep naming schools.” ln a couple of weeks that list could be pretty long. KU is,a 5 in a room full if 10's at this point.

I think we all knew that, if this team didn't make serious strides on the field, there was no way Beaty could hold the class together. To your point, I think 4 wins might have kept us in play with these guys. Three wins probably wouldn't have done it.

As we've seen with the Sunday commitments, the guys we are going to get now are the guys that no other P5 program is offering. That doesn't mean they can't play, but it does mean that it will be an uphill battle and that Beaty has failed again as a recruiter. And, it points out the fact that Zenger panicked when he overpaid Hull for what is turning out to be a horrible job of recruiting.

Sonny Dykes just signed to be SMU's coach. He would have come to Kansas, running the same offense and moved this program forward.

Girod, it's still not too late. Do the right thing for the few remaining, real KU football fans. You know, the ones who actually think we should be better.

Kevin Robert Fest 4 years, 6 months ago

If all or most of the LA kids decommit what's the purpose of having Hull on staff? If he can get these kids to even consider KU if another successful program wants him he can definitely get them to that school. He's a truly valuable asset just not at KU until the program gets better. I think the recruits respect him but when they really see what's going on they have to go with their brains not their hearts.

Marcus Balzer 4 years, 6 months ago

Remember when we all thought that signing Hull to a big deal was a good like it has been pointed out if he is losing the LA pipeline what good is he really to the program? That is great that he got those kids to give verbal commitments but what good is that if they don't ever sign and set foot on campus.

Kevin Robert Fest 4 years, 6 months ago

Why would these kids want to wait 2,3,4 years to be competitive, look at Isaiah Simmons he went to Clemson and he could be going to his 3rd national championship game in a row, that's 3 National Championship Games in a row, while KU has won 3 games period. God Bless Coach Hull but he is swimming against a Tidal Wave. I don't think Jesus could convince these kids to come at this point.

Brad Avery 4 years, 6 months ago

Hey, all the switching of commitments is probably getting KU more publicity in a major area for recruiting than a school that has won three games in three seasons deserves.

Glen Miller 4 years, 6 months ago

We are losing commits at an alarming rate. We have had decommits before, but not like this. Plus, I would think in the eyes of recruits this doesn't look good. It has literally been a mass exodus of talent...... Is this all about lack of wins? Maybe they don't think Beaty will stick around? I just can't see why there are so many guys leaving and really not even that upset or torn about it.

Brett McCabe 4 years, 6 months ago

I can only imagine what Beaty told them when they were being recruited. All the whiz-bang, "we're going to a bowl this year" and win. These kids aren't stupid.

So, the lack of wins, which leads to speculation about Beaty's future, and some aggressive recruiting from other schools has formed the perfect storm. Beaty has no credibility. It's over but apparently Girod, Zenger and Beaty don't know it.

Michael Maris 4 years, 6 months ago

I see (on 12.08.2017) that Jace Sternberger has committed to play at aTm (now). Now rated a 3*** TE (coming out of Juco).

Hell, why not go for the Gusto and fire the AD and Beaty and hire FAU AD (Patrick "Pat" G. Chun) and Head Coach (Lane Kiffin)?

Jeff Coffman 4 years, 6 months ago

Because Les Miles is still available...but I like your thinking!

Jeff Coffman 4 years, 6 months ago

Last and only endorsement from Zenger in his statement was the way the recruiting class was coming together.

What is Zenger holding onto now?

Zenger and Beaty should not be employed by KU by 1/1/2018. If they are, then Girod should be sent packing as well. If Zenger wanted to wait to hold the recruits, look now, it is non-existent, and all Beaty is doing is signing a bunch of JUCOs to ruin the program for the next guy.

John Fitzgerald 4 years, 6 months ago

Add another JUCO recruit to the list, Foster Dixson. He’s a DE which makes me wonder if Wise and/or Armstrong might declare. Or maybe we’re just looking for depth?

Glen Miller 4 years, 6 months ago

Right now I think that we are just trying to get scholarships filled. At this point I doubt position means anything when you've got 15 schollies at minimum not spoken for. Armstrong and Wise would only be here for another year anyways if they stayed, so adding defensive line help isn't a red flag to me on their staying or going really.

Brad Potter 4 years, 6 months ago

i was perilously holding onto to the little faith i had left much like Gabe did on the side of a rocky mountain with no coat on or sleeves in the blockbuster hit, cliffhanger. That all changed when i saw the photo from the in-house visit last week with our top commitment. I then began to gag violently. Not surprisingly Devonta Jason decommitted a few days later. Once the violent gagging ended i realized that both Gabe and my allegiance to this regime have actually succumbed to the elements and fallen 14,000 ft in an embarrassing death spiral.

Kevin Robert Fest 4 years, 6 months ago

I think his attitude was if they do it lm out. If they act like adults lll go. Well you see what happened. I had to look twice could've been mistaken for a coaches meeting pic. Good God.

Bryson Stricker 4 years, 6 months ago

saw "the photo". Dumb* this was obviously part two of a picture. They took one with him smiling ear to ear which should have shown you how happy he is with our coaching staff. This is obviously an "act like a fool or goofy" picture. gtfo with your sh

Kevin Robert Fest 4 years, 6 months ago

They can take that act on the road next year after they all get fired, they can call themselves 5 Fools and a Dope.

Kevin Robert Fest 4 years, 6 months ago

Ha ha ha exactly the coaching staff has been acting like fools all season. Good call.

Relax Bryson its ONLY Tuesday. Don't worry lm sure that you are still invited to the Beatys Christmas party. Im sure your invite was just lost in the mail.
