Bill Self does his version of the Ben McLemore dance; Jack Harry says KU deserves Big 12 title

An abbreviated Seen It? blog for your Tuesday ...

• The regular-season finale trailer of the "Pay Heed" videos series from the KU Athletics department was released late Monday, and once again, dancing is the highlight.

This time it's from KU coach Bill Self after he receives his 500th win gameball in the locker room after the Jayhawks' overtime victory over Iowa State.

At first Self doesn't dance, and then he does, going into full Ben McLemore mode.

You'll definitely want to watch the video below (starting at the 1:32 mark) at least twice: once to watch Self's dance moves and another time to watch McLemore's face as Self is dancing.

The Kansas City Star's Rustin Dodd points out in his latest "KU Chalkboard" blog that heading into the season, KU coach Bill Self had the same number of conference losses at KU as NCAA Tournament wins (23).

To keep that streak going, Self will have to get four NCAA wins with KU this season, meaning the Jayhawks would have to advance to the Final Four.

The Jayhawk Talk blog had CBS senior blogger Matt Norlander on a podcast to discuss the NCAA Tournament and KU.

Former Lawrence Journal-World staffer Alex Parker had a story last week about how backlash over the KU alternative adidas uniforms helped bring a spike in traffic for the Zubaz website ... even though Zubaz has no affiliation with the new uniforms.

And finally, KSHB's Jack Harry — a well-known Missouri Tigers supporter — says that KU deserved the Big 12 title outright over Kansas State because it beat the Wildcats twice in his latest "Jack's Smack."

Kevin Crook 9 years, 8 months ago

Yes we are Kansas, and the Big 12 is ours...and K-State's...what a ridiculous way to handle a conference championship. Two teams with the same record should not "share" the championship if one team beats the other team twice. If the two teams split their head-to-head match-ups or there are not home and home series like before with the North/South split, the tie makes sense. This is pathetic for the Big 12 and even more pathetic that K-State celebrated a title shared with a team that beat them twice... This isn't the YMCA, why not just give a championship trophy to everyone in the Big 12? These kids are all champions...

Sam Constance 9 years, 8 months ago

If you feel good about claiming half of a championship with a team that led you for 79:24 out of 80:00 in two matchups, then more power to you.

The shared title rule is a holdover from when the Big 12 played an unbalanced schedule. It was intended to prevent a team from having an advantage in the title race because they happened to get a home game against the would-be second place team.

Now I'll fully allow that KSU can have their half title, because the rule is still the rule and will be until they decide to change it. But give me a break with this "KU didn't get it done" crap.

Keven Courtney 9 years, 8 months ago

KU swept KSU and Iowa State. so what's your point that you swept Baylor and TCU?

Micky Baker 9 years, 8 months ago

Still trying to blame the refs. Iowa State could have still won that game had they not kept jacking up 3's early in the shot clock in the final 5 minutes.

Al Martin 9 years, 8 months ago

Fine. So you also have to say that we haven't won nine in a row as well. You're entitled to an opinion, but you ought to be consistent about it.

Kip_McSmithers 9 years, 8 months ago

I think kevsum was consistent with their opinion.

April13 9 years, 8 months ago

It was ours to win. We stunk. So now we get to kiss our sister. And it's her first kiss in a long, long, long time.

Rock Chalk 9 years, 8 months ago

Loved the video. I feel better after watching that.

oneamongthebest 9 years, 8 months ago

I completely agree that we shouldn't be sharing the title with a team we beat twice. Having the Round-Robin play makes this solely a KU title. We should have taken care of business at the same time. TCU and Baylor...

Keven Courtney 9 years, 8 months ago

I am more upset over the loss to Oklahoma St then TCU. We should not lose in Allen Field House.

Micky Baker 9 years, 8 months ago

I'd suggest then that you stop whining about a game K-State didn't play in. K-State played two games against Kansas and couldn't win.

sammie09 9 years, 8 months ago

It is a sport. Ku does great so much as you have pointed out. Relax!

There were equally bad calls against KU earlier in the game. Those two at the end only stand out because they were at the end. And you're right, you SHOULD have won it outright, but KSU choked just like they always do.

Al Martin 9 years, 8 months ago

And about that call. The refs swallowed their whistle during the entire play, so they didn't call EJ getting fouled as he drove the lane, before the charge. But no one from K-State or I-State wants to think about that, do they?

Kip_McSmithers 9 years, 8 months ago

Here's a link to the photo.

Lucious No Call

Lucious No Call by KJD

Micky Baker 9 years, 8 months ago

Yep, this is certainly a foul by the Iowa State player that would have resulted in the two free throws EJ made.

Micky Baker 9 years, 8 months ago

You didn't look. You won't look. You are mad about a game your team didn't play. This is the very definition of pathetic.

Alec White 9 years, 8 months ago

C'mon guys, let these K-Staters celebrate their shared title. Most of these fans haven't had the pleasure of winning a conference title since they made the unfortunate choice of rooting for the Wildcats. I mean it has been what, 30+ years? They're just losing their Big XII virginity, and I bet it feels oh so good to them. An early exit from the tourney and a letdown season next year will surely remind them of their impressive mediocrity.

jjordhawk 9 years, 8 months ago

This comment was removed by the site staff for violation of the usage agreement.

Sam Constance 9 years, 8 months ago

My issue isn't with allowing KSU fans to celebrate their title.

My issue is the fact that after winning a share of the title in spite of being unable to even hold a lead of more than 2 points for a full minute against their co-champion, they are here talking trash as if they won the damn thing outright.

Sam Constance 9 years, 8 months ago

This might be hard to understand, but the games between two conference co-champions are more relevant to the discussion about that co-championship than some random loss throughout the season. Glossing over it with some generic "MATCHUPS!!!" is a cop out.

But really the point here is that I'm not expecting KSU fans to "apologize" for winning. Enjoy it. Celebrate. Go crazy. That's what I meant when I said "My issue isn't with allowing KSU fans to celebrate their title" But you can sure as heck bet there weren't any Jayhawk fans over on other Big 12 teams' message boards ranting and raving after any of our previous 8 titles. Or hearing Bill Self make whiny loser comments about officials being a major factor in how the title came to be.

No, again--and you may want to slow down when you read my comment this time, since this isn't new--my issue is with the trash talk from KSU fans, as if their half of the title is somehow more valid than KU's. It would be annoying under any circumstance, but given the specific scenario in which KSU won their share (by being unable to stay on the floor with their co-champ), it's not just annoying, it's delusional.

Sam Constance 9 years, 8 months ago

Jesus pal. You are one insecure little tike.

Micky Baker 9 years, 8 months ago

It isn't anyone here preventing them from celebrating. They in fact don't think KU deserves it after beating them twice.

Sam Constance 9 years, 8 months ago

Unlike the gift you received from Baylor, right?

Or was that final play how ol' Brucie drew it up? Or should I say, how YOU drew it up, Mr. Weber?

I'd know that signature sour grapes whine anywhere, even in text.

quill_46 9 years, 8 months ago

Lol, its funny you say that because if you wouldnt have lost to the Jayhawks twice, you wouldnt have had to share the conference title also,so your comment is retaeded.

Micky Baker 9 years, 8 months ago

How about saying this, if K-State would have beaten Kansas, they would have won outright. That is what K-State has control over. I seriously hope K-State loses tomorrow to shut up a bunch of uninformed fans that obviously don't understand accountability.

jgkojak 9 years, 8 months ago

Why not make the conf tourney meaningful?

Why not, if teams tie, award the championship to whoever gets the furthest in the conf tournament - then KU and KSU would be playing for the B12 championship in KC - and THAT would be some good TV.

Think about how much fun the B10 tourney would be w/4 teams tied.

Joe Joseph 9 years, 8 months ago

Bad idea. Kansas fans know far too well that the best team does not always win (rarely?) in a single-elimination format.

Rules are rules. Kansas State beat teams that Kansas could not. It's not fair to say Kansas deserves the Big XII outright when it couldn't beat TCU, Baylor, and Oklahoma... all teams that Kansas State did beat.

I have no doubts that Kansas is the better team than Kansas State, but K-State had an equally good conference season. Arguably better...

JayHawkFanToo 9 years, 8 months ago

But KU did beat all the teams you mentioned; Baylor by 17, Oklahoma by 13 and TCY by 26, and all could have been worse if HC Self wanted to run up the score like whatshisname did at Baylor. By the way KSU could not beat KU in two tries losing by 4 at home and by 21 at AFH. So, KU beat EVERY team in the conference, KSU did not.

Joe Joseph 9 years, 8 months ago

And they also lost to all of those teams I (and you) mentioned.........

JayHawkFanToo 9 years, 8 months ago

That is not what you said. This is what you posted:

"Rules are rules. Kansas State beat teams that Kansas could not. It's not fair to say Kansas deserves the Big XII outright when it couldn't beat TCU, Baylor, and Oklahoma... all teams that Kansas State did beat."

I simply mentioned that they indeed did beat them...and KSU...twice.

JayHawkFanToo 9 years, 8 months ago

They were up 15 points up with 3 minutes left and 19 point up with 2 minutes left with the KU starters on the bench and the Baylor starters still bombing away; do you want to try again?

By the way, the only team in the conference KSU did not beat is...drum roll...KU; it must really stick in your craw.

Maggie Morrissey 9 years, 8 months ago

We did beat TCU, Baylor and Oklahoma, once and the point still remains we beat KSU TWICE!

Micky Baker 9 years, 8 months ago

Dude, after all the whining you've done about the refs in a game your team didn't even play. I'll repeat, this is what pathetic is.

Ken Tomberlin 9 years, 8 months ago

The shared title has worked for us and against us. In two of the three previous shared titles, we lost the head to head match up with the co-winner. Makes it a little hard to complain about sharing it now.

kellerman411 9 years, 8 months ago

Wrong. We played them once on the road. Had we played them at Allen, we could of smashed them and split. This is nothing like that. We beat them in their own house.

Sam Constance 9 years, 8 months ago

Not really. KSU had a shot to beat us in their own gym. A chance that we did not get in those two years where we shared a title with Texas and Oklahoma, since we played those two teams on the road.

So while I will happily concede KSU's shared title, since the rule is still the rule, there is no shame in looking at the SPIRIT of the rule.

sammie09 9 years, 8 months ago

Again, if ksu would have won one more game and put ksu as the sole winner, ku would have still beaten ksu twice. It does not matter.

Sam Constance 9 years, 8 months ago

There is nothing "objective" about bringing up a 'what if' scenario to make a point.

Sam Constance 9 years, 8 months ago

No. This has nothing to do with the "KU opinion" (whatever that is--we don't get memos telling us the official opinion, you know) at all. To imply there is a rational basis for "snob hill" is the height of lacking objectivity.

But to your point, the "what if" scenario is not objective (or logical) because it ignores the idea of causality. You can't objectively suggest that the two head-to-head wins are meaningless by bringing up a specific situation in which they literally ARE meaningless (if one team has the better record than the other) unless the thing that ACTUALLY happened was the situation in which they are meaningless.

Now please don't confuse my point with a suggestion that we should ignore the Big 12 rules for conference champions. The rules are the rules and under those rules, KSU earned a shared title. That is objectivity. But one can objectively recognize that KSU earned their half of the title under the current rules while recognizing that the way the current rules are written is designed for a conference that plays an unbalanced schedule. Since the Big 12 no longer plays an unbalanced schedule, it shouldn't be a surprised that people (including guys like Jack Harry, who traditionally isn't objective AGAINST Kansas) think that it's strange to have a co-champ who swept their co-champ counterpart. You clearly have some insecurity about it, given that you are trolling our message boards, where it shouldn't be a surprise that opinions are slanted towards a pro-KU opinion.

Now run along.

Micky Baker 9 years, 8 months ago

You seriously call yourself objective? LOL.

Sam Constance 9 years, 8 months ago

Yeah, the fact that KU mopped the floor with KSU in two games wouldn't have mattered IF...

But as you clearly recognize, KSU didn't win one more game, which makes the fact that KU swept KSU in dominating fashion absolutely matter. Like I've said all along--enjoy the conference title. Just know that when you win a share of a conference title but can't even compete with your co-champ, it makes you look like a complete wad to come to that co-champ's message boards talking trash like a drunken farmer.

Note2Self 9 years, 8 months ago

If we are not "well thought of" then KSU is not thought of at all.

Sam Constance 9 years, 8 months ago

Are you being intentionally dense here? The issue is THE TRASH TALKING. Not enjoying your shared title.

FOR THE LAST TIME: Kansas State is co-champ of the Big 12. I'm not denying this. I'm not in any way suggesting that the Wildcats are undeserving--they won their share by the rules, fair and square.

The idea that you are holding anyone "accountable" by flaming around here is just idiotic.

I always used to think Missouri fans had the bigger inferiority complex. Clearly that is not the case. Get lost.

Micky Baker 9 years, 8 months ago

Nope, you can't. You keep demonstrating your lack of knowledge.

jimmyjms 9 years, 8 months ago

@irtnog2001: Or KSU could have won their final game of the got swept by KU. Blaming the refs is the weak sauce.

texashawk10 9 years, 8 months ago

So even Jack Harry recognizes that Bruce Weber is a tool and an idiot. That's an impressive feat to accomplish when KU is involved

JayHawkFanToo 9 years, 8 months ago

That is one great video. That just shows what a great coach he is to take part int the fun with his team. Great coach and Great man.

Phil Leister 9 years, 8 months ago

I get the argument that KU was 2-0 against K-State and therefore should be the outright champions. But look at this scenario for a second- let's say KU goes 16-2 in conference, and 2-0 against K-State, but loses twice to TCU. Also, let's say K-State goes 16-2, and those lone two losses came against KU. I'd argue that K-State deserves the title here, since their only two losses came against one of the top teams in the league. Meanwhile, even though KU beat K-State twice, they lost two to TCU.

That's a long-winded way of saying that even though we did beat them twice, we still lost to the worst team in the league. If you compare our wins to K-State, we should be considered the better team. If you compare our losses to K-State, K-State is the better team.

JayHawkFanToo 9 years, 8 months ago

In every tie breaker I know, the head-to-head result is the first criteria because it compares the two teams against each other. KU won both times, by 4 point away and more convincingly by 21 at home.

Sam Constance 9 years, 8 months ago

They also led for 99.25% of the time they two were playing (79:24 out of 80:00).

For the other 0.75% of the two games, KSU led by a grand total of 2 points.

Sam Constance 9 years, 8 months ago

I'm not sure what point your scenario is intended to make. Not only is that not how the season played out, but that is a highly specialized, unlikely scenario.

And I just don't get the idea of determining the "better" team in different ways--by wins or by losses. A team is measured by their overall wins AND losses. Parsing them out does nothing except artificially segment the full data set into a less meaningful data set.

sammie09 9 years, 8 months ago

Well, your outcry should pertain to football as well then.

Note2Self 9 years, 8 months ago

So will we determine the Big XII regular season championship based on the RPI of the teams you lost to in conference? Sounds like a crappier version of the BCS computer. I'll pass on that grass Hawk Overseas.

Chris Bruning 9 years, 8 months ago

so the pay heed video above was pretty cool eh?

Phil Leister 9 years, 8 months ago

Someone made this comment somewhere on here last week: Sharing the conference title is like kissing your sister, if your sister is Bar Refaeli. Kissing your sister sucks, but it's all about perspective. We still won the Big XII.

ArgyleJayhawks 9 years, 8 months ago

Hey Jesse,

That is the trailer for the Pay Heed season finale that is forthcoming (I think).

Jesse Newell 9 years, 8 months ago

Yeah, that's what the wording looks like. I changed my wording above to reflect that.

Vernon Riggs 9 years, 8 months ago

I have always felt like I couldn't agree with anything Jack said. So in keeping with that, let me congratulate KSUck on sharing the Big12 Basketball title.

sammie09 9 years, 8 months ago

So if KSU would have won against OSU last Saturday, KU still would have beaten KSU twice this season. However, we would have still gotten the conference title then (alone) with more wins (even though KU beat KSU twice). It is just how it works. KSU shared the title in football even though we beat the team we shared with, as mentioned. Not as many games are played in football so it was a very big deal with the head to head factor then as well. However, rules are rules. KU fans are so weird as the ones who get the most verbal/rude didn't even graduate from there. I come from a house divided. I root for KU even though I graduated from KSU if we are not playing eachother. Be proud of the state.

sammie09 9 years, 8 months ago

I get that. Just stating that the rant about the two losses to KU wouldn't matter in that scenario. There are so many other factors too that I won't get into. Too bad BOTH ku and ksu lost last saturday so one couldn't win it alone.

Sam Constance 9 years, 8 months ago

You do realize we could provide "WHAT IF THIS!?" scenarios ad infinitum, right?

When different things occur, they have different implications. This is not a complex thing to try and understand. It's only because KU and KSU tied with overall record that the two head-to-head matchups become so relevant. So it's insane to say "well if their records weren't identical, then the head-to-head games don't matter as much". Well no sh-- sherlock. That's how causality works.

What a waste of everyone's time.

Micky Baker 9 years, 8 months ago

Pipe down charlie. You haven't found the golden ticket yet.

kay_you 9 years, 8 months ago

Wow, Jack actually said some nice things about KU. Please, please, please don't pick us to win. Whatever he predicts, the opposite usually happens.

Jeff Coffman 9 years, 8 months ago

I'm sure in 50 years when KU is celebrating around their 100th conference title and KSU will look back to this date, and say something like...remember back in ought 13 when we tied that team for a conference title...that was the greatest moment in our entire history...seems like only yesterday when we had that one great year.

Michael Luby 9 years, 8 months ago

I love the McClemore Shuffle. Its freekin awesome.
OMG Jack "MU lover" Henry actually said KU should have it outright?
Someone should check the temp in hell, while burning the rule saying Kstate should share the conf. title with KU cuz we beat them twice.

What does that Saluki Jack Harry know.? I used to work with him on the weekend "Scene" at WDAF when he first came to KC in 1970. It was a great pleasure and some of the best time of my life. Bicentennial Class of '66.

Micky Baker 9 years, 8 months ago

Here is an objective look at the Iowa State game in Ames. First, in the final 5 minutes Iowa State jacked up 4 or 5 three pointers early in the shot clock and missed 3 or 4 of them. This is the real reason they lost the game. They weren't disciplined and tried to embarrass Kansas in Ames. It backfired. Just another 15 seconds off the shot clock on each of those possessions and Iowa State wins that game by double digits because Kansas doesn't get the extra possessions.

There is also perspective in Lawrence as to why winning the Big 12 in football in a down year and sharing the regular season title in basketball. Kansas has had recent experience with higher accomplishments than that, and that doesn't even include 9 straight. 8 straight beats one good year in two sports. Not only this but Kansas won the Orange Bowl and the basketball National Championship in the 2007 - '08 academic year.

I would also like to say this, I kind of doubt that either K-State or Kansas had a goal at the beginning of the year for a school to win conference championships in both sports. Kansas sets a goal to win national championships in basketball not conference championships. This is being arrogant. It's just what the truth is, particularly this year coming off a year in which Kansas played in the national championship game.

As far as the refs go, Kansas gets a whole lot of call that go against them every year in men's basketball. It's part of the game. You have to overcome it, execute, play defense, make shots, etc. In the game at Ames, Iowa State didn't do much of any of those things. They got cocky. It wasn't Kansas who thought they had the game won, Iowa State did.

Steve Gantz 9 years, 8 months ago

Wow, I missed some fun yesterday. I can't imagine how intolerable havecents would be if they had actually beaten us this year. By the way havecents, the picture to the left of my post was taken at the National Championship game last year, have you ever had your picture taken at a national championship game with your wife?
