FBS and FCS? OMG!

By Staff     Sep 4, 2007

Forgive us as we try to clean up this mess. You know, everything was going good when the top 119 teams in college football — Kansas included — were called Division I-A teams, and the rest in D-1 were considered I-AA teams. It was quick, to the point, easy to comprehend and a pretty accurate way of describing which level was which. So naturally, it was changed. We are now supposed to refer to Division I-A as the “Football Bowl Subdivision” and I-AA as the “Football Championship Subdivision.” You’ll see me and others in the Kansas media try to make this as clear as possible while previewing this week’s KU game against Football Championship Subdivison participant Southeastern Louisiana (just rolls off the tongue, doesn’t it?). It’s not easy, especially since the name changes weren’t highly publicized when they took place, and the two new names are so similar that it’s incredibly confusing. If you ask me, this is a classic case of not leaving well enough alone. Without doing any reporting (why would I?) the word is it has something to do with making the I-AA teams feel less inferior (insert my eyes rolling here). But we’ll do our best to try and explain the new setup, knowing it’ll probably take a couple of years to sink in.To review:Division I-A = Football BOWL subidivision. Division I-AA = Football CHAMPIONSHIP subdivision. Me = Frustrated. Now, onto the nuts and bolts of Tuesday’s press conference:- Patrick Resby obviously won the strong safety job over Tang Bacheyie, and Mangino contributed it to two things: The confidence that came with Resby getting better acquainted with the system, and an injury to Bacheyie that kept him out of several practices in August. Mangino said Bacheyie is better and the staff remains high on him.- Associate athletic director Jim Marchiony said that about 69,000 tickets have been sold for the Kansas-Missouri game at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., this year. That includes KU’s season-ticket sales. Arrowhead holds 79,451 fans.- Players of the week, as picked by KU coaches, were quarterback Todd Reesing on offense, linebacker James Holt and defensive end John Larson on defense, and kicker Scott Webb on special teams.- And finally, the Big 12 players of the week were announced this morning: Nebraska RB Marlon Lucky on offense, Missouri DB Pig Brown on defense, and Colorado kicker Kevin Eberhart on special teams. It was exactly [how I voted.][1]That’s all for today. Until next time: Love, peace and soooooooul! [1]: http://www2.kusports.com/blogs/sawin_wood/2007/sep/02/sawinwood090207/
