We’ll probably never know all of the details of [what happened outside the Moon Bar][1].Things like this get spun, swept under the rug, and processed through high-paid P.R-minded filters. When KU basketball players are injured in fights involving knives, the athletics department cranks up the spin cycle. However, here’s what we do know. ![][2]J.R. Giddens still eight months away from legal drinking age was in the parking lot outside of the Moon Bar at 2 a.m. in the middle of finals week. Somebody had a knife a weapon that somehow sliced Giddens’ muscular calf. The same calf that slammed home those thrilling alley-oops. The same calf that broke everybody’s hearts hoisting jump shots in March. We now also officially know that Giddens is trouble. When he was a senior in high school, he was arrested on five felony charges after a Wal-Mart shopping trip went awry. On a Christmas shopping trip with his uncle, Giddens picked up over one thousand dollars worth of merchandise but only paid 20 dollars at the checkout stand. No charges were ever filed against Giddens, who never faced any public punishment from either Roy Williams or Bill Self.Strike one.Last summer, Giddens and Darnell Jackson were involved in a car accident in Oklahoma City. The timing of the accident at about 3 a.m. on a Sunday was curious, but the incident never raised any serious eyebrows. We were all thrilled that Giddens wasn’t seriously injured in the crash. But why was it that trouble kept finding J.R.?After all, we never heard of any late night auto accidents involving Keith Langford, Wayne Simien, Michael Lee, or Aaron Miles.Strike two.And that brings us to this week’s bizarre scuffle outside a karaoke bar. While the entire truth of the incident will never see the light of day it’s just the latest of a troublesome string of incidents for Giddens. We’ve got trouble in River City, and it starts with J and ends with R.Whether he was at fault or not, Giddens should receive a stern warning from Self. One more incident and he should be on the first bus back to Oklahoma City. The next time J.R. thinks about going out on a Wednesday, maybe he should rent a movie instead. You don’t have to be John Randle to know that even talented athletes have to face the music. One more strike against Giddens, and he should be out.
